Just got back from an incredible night at "Wicked". Idina was back, and she sounded great !! I heard that she did not make it back in time for the matinee, and that Eden was in. (Would still love to see Eden in this role, but I am sure that I will see "Brooklyn" a gazillion times, so its all good) Her voice sounded amazing. I noticed it more on "I'm Not That Girl" than on any of the others. It just sounded so melodic. Every note sounded great !!
"Defying Gravity" was great, and "The Wizard and I" was perfect, and the crowd went nuts after both songs. KC was even more over the top than normal. Dont know if Idina's return gave her a little juice, but right from the start, she was hysterical !!
Also, had a bit of a blooper (SPOILER FOLLOWS):
In the part where she is going to turn Elfie's frock into a ball gown, she flubbed a line, and proceeded to put her thumb on the backside of her front two teeth, as if to say "duh"... got a nice laugh.
Joel Grey is still out, so we saw Sean McCourt as the wizard. He has a good voice, but plays the role differently, and he is a dead ringer for Jim Carrey's Fire Marshall Bill character !! His wizard is a bit more evil, and much more sure of himself. Sort of over-confident. I like the kind of nebbish quality that Mr. Grey brings to the role more. Randy Harrison as Bog really made me miss Christopher Fitzgerald. He as a nice voice, but he was not convincing enough for me that he is pining over Glinda.
Everyone else was great. Norbert has really grown on me in this show.
Waited after the show by the stage door. Absolutely mobbed, but did manage to get both Idina (before she bolted into car with her luggage!!) and KC to sign my Playbill, so that was cool. Great night !!!

Posted: 7/4/04 at 12:36amThis is interesting. Does anyone know when Joel Grey is expected back or is it indefinite? She didn't even go home? She carried her luggage out the stage door? lol I'm getting excited to see this next week IF Joey Grey's there.

Posted: 7/4/04 at 12:59amWell, I've been in her place before, doing a show and then going on hiatus, and then coming back - and there is nothing like that first time back when you haven't been thinking about the show for whatever amount of time and then come back and do it again. You walk out onto that stage and it's like opening night all over again - yet you're completely comfortable. It's a great feeling. So it definitely ups the adrenaline and boosts performance quality.
