Yea, Hanna, I know what you're saying. Definately not a perfect performance when you can see the wheels turning in the actor's head telling them how to "Act". Shame, though.
What's a shame is that she won a Tony for that. It was probably because there wasn't great competition that year [Georgia Brown (Threepenny Opera), Beth Fowler (Sweeney Todd), Liliane Montevecchi (Grand Hotel, The Musical)], but I would imagine that Beth Fowler was better (I didn't see her). I wouldn't have chosed Liliane Montevecchi over Tyne and I didn't see Georgia Brown. But compared to this year's best actress nominee's, Tyne wasn't even in their league.

while at the end of her run, her voice may have been weaker, her acting was def. at its best. i saw wicked in january of 04 and Idina sounded awesome!!!! i saw it again in August and she basically just sang the songs as they were written which isnt bad at all...and i saw it again on January 2nd of 05 and i actually thought that was her best performance. while she did gasp for air it actually worked lol...for me anyway, cuz the notes that came out sounded beautiful....the way she ended her defying gravity that night was perfect...better than the original broadway cast recording i think...and her acting was flawless....ok im done lol....
I had heard that Idina had asthma, thus her gasping.
Either way, I think we all know she has a great voice, so her gasping isn't that big of a deal.
I saw Tyne Daly in Gypsy 9 times and she was fabulous. The recording is not so great, but her performances in the theatre were all consistently wonderful. I saw her early in the run, her final performance (1st time) and the final performance.
Now, back to Idina's gasping...
She smokes???? Thats terrible!!!
Obsessed much?

I saw Idina in WICKED in Sept. '04 and she sounded amazing. I didn't notice any gasping, and the sound poured out of her effortlessly. As a singer, I tend to focus on technique a LOT. I think Idina's just human, and like any singer, she has days where her voice "cooperates" and other days, not so much.
She has a pretty impressive resume behind her (in terms of singing/broadway jobs) so I highly doubt she has no technique whatsoever. If a performer has been consistently good up until a point where she gets sick and yet still performs through it, blame the sickness, not the performer.
Though whoever made the decision for her to go on with bronchitis is clearly an idiot.
She doesn't have good technique PERIOD. She doesn't breath correctly and most certainly doesn't belt correctly. She has a fantastic voice but she strains it soooo much I'm surprised she doesn't have nodes, or can still speak!
My voice teacher cringes at the sight of Idina belting, her neck is all tense and her jaw is tense..that's real bad for your voice.
Yeah I know, but what I'm saying is why is all this coming up now and not before...you know, in her OTHER roles?
Meh, maybe she's just not cut out for Elphaba. I still think she's great. :)
Yes, I believe she does smoke. I remember Anthony Rapp somewhere saying that he was one of the only ones in the movie cast who didn't smoke. That could cause all of the breathing problems, plus her improper breathing techniques.

Awww... Anthony! IMO if she smokes that's her choice. Some people smoke, some don't. I still think she's an amazing performer. :)
To those of you who say she has no technique, you just don't know what you're talking about. She has a DIFFERENt technique than you, and probably uses her voice in a completely different way. Never had I heard a performance where Idina was lacking any technique whatsoever until after she performed with bronchitis in Wicked. Her breathing is causing her vocal problems.
Anyway, if she TRULY was doing nearly as much bad to her voice as everyone makes it out to be, her voice would be gone. Long gone. You can't "scream" through Wicked 8 nights a week for over a year.

i really have to agree with you.
i dont want to sound rude but people on this board do not know everything about singing (though some seem to think they do)
she does have a great voice and maybe no the best technique but its one that works for her.
no one has the right to say shes doing this this and this wrong bla bla bla.

listen to Patti LuPone on the Baker's Wife recording.
Then listen to Patti LuPone on Evita
Then listen to Patti on Anything Goes.
part, I'm sure is just a natural maturation of the voice, but it's clear SOMETHING is damaging those chords...was it screaming through EVITA? or perhaps the fact that she smokes like a chimney...my guess is...a combination of the two.
I'm a bit dissapointed if she does smoke. But I know for a fact that she was classically trianed through highschool and I htink college, then wanted a more bluesy sound for her vocals in her own music. She said herself that she once was a soprano... but she has technique. But also, I know that performing after your sick is a bitch. I have gotten sick twice in the past two years leaving me with almost no voice for two months. I finally got it back now, but am taking precautions and have actually started formal voice lessons. But yeah. Bronchitus reaks havoc on your voice, and she'd have to leave for two months to totally rest up. So not to dissapoint fans/producers/rest of the people involved with Wicked/ticket sales, she decided to be a trooper, and sing after the bronchitus, and let it heal slower, but still get back in the ring sooner.
