IMHO, it's a nice sound.
But it certainly wouldn't have made her a star.
Let alone landed her a record contract.
Oh my, God, why can't she sing like this all the time?!!
Oh, and by the way, many people in this world can do something just as well and better than Ms. LuPone. She is not the end all be all.

Care to give a few examples?
I saw this video a couple of months ago, and was amazed. It made me realize how different she sounds today. Not in a completely bad way, but I wonder if she could still sing like this?
Nice Rav.
I'm not even that into Patti's version from her Live! CD, but I've heard her do it other times and it's wonderful.
I adore this song, I guess I prefer Idina's voice in this video to how she sings now, but something about it still irks me.

WHOA! Pitchy and over sung! Not enjoyable.

I think Menzel just has a quality about her - the "X" factor, or whatever. She is just so likeable and watchable. She may not be the best actress/singer - but it's not like the great rememorable actors ever are. I mean, Marilyn Monroe wasn't really either (great actor/singer), but she's still love because you just wanted to watch her. And in no way am I comparing the two ladies' "legend" status, but I'm just saying.

Screechy. Painful to hear. No soul nor emotion. It's a lullaby, for God's sake.
Heard Patti LuPone sing this on a PBS special several years ago; can't remember what it was like, but it was surely better than this.
Listen to the version by Kirsten Benton and Stan Chandler at the following link. You can order their CD off Amazon.com.

I was just about to mention Kirsten Benton's version of this song, which was the first time I heard It. I love it, it's a gorgeous song.
what show is this from?
I like it, it's just...
not Idina.I absolutely love her voice now because it's so unique. This is like every other good singer out there.
