Ok...at first she was nervous vocally...but something about her! In this role...she is Elphaba! Gave me chills! I love her! You guys, I seriously think she deserves a Tony. She was amazing!

I think the nervousness was a character choice
No no no...I mean the way she sung the note. Sharp/flat...when you sing and you're nervous and tend to be afraid to go for the note...sorry can't really explain right now. You know what I mean? Sorry! *lol* Need sleep!
For those of you who have seen the show or have heard the music, would you consider DEFYING GRAVITY to be one of the best songs in the show, or just like the rest?
I ask because other than POPULAR, I've not heard the score, and I thought that song was rather good.
Yet so many reviews and people here have said the score is so-so to not good...
Well, it's because most people think that Popular should have been the main song. Not even taking in the plot or that there's finally a musical with an outstanding plot!!! An on the edge of you seat plot!
Yes, i think Defying Gravity IS one of the main songs. Hell, it ends the first act...and how! It's perfect. I'm not a fan of Stephen's past musicals. This musical is so different than his other works and I like it! Hell...I LOVE IT! I've been on a WICKED high for...let's see now...this summer 'til now. Listen to the songs every day. Addicted! And proud of it!

It seems like it has good melodies...it's his lyrics. Frankly they aren't so hot.

i thought idna and the cast gave a awsome performence!!! very exciteing!!!!! i can only imagine how it is on the stage with KC!!! idna sounded awsome!!!!!!! she really is a vocal power house!!!! :)
i just feel bad that the cast had to rush back to theatre and get ready for a show without alot time to relaxe.
I think anyone who says this is a bad score is on crack. SEE THE SHOW! Then decide. I have had those songs stuck in my head for a month.
Thank you NewYorkuniq!!! Words so true and ...green?
Sorry...on a WICKED high! God I love this show! Going to see it in December after Christmas!!!
Yeah, it was damned near impossible to approximate how thrilling the number is in the theater, but they came mighty close. The lighting was particularly effective, daring to be darkish. So much better that the shivering gals outside of Rockefeller on Today, not remotely suggesting the magic of the show with those two clunky beds.
The abridged version of the number had some odd moments (the one that allowed her to move upstage was awkward, but didn't hurt, since they played the intention of the scene, i.e. will she fly and escape them...). To a musical layman's ears, Idina seemed to be watching her voice a bit, but still hit all the money notes. Very expressive version. Well pitched to the camera and it seemed a more "personal" rendition than when I saw it (early Oct). Bravo to whatever Letterman producer clearly loved the show and tried to squeeze its values in, flying and all. All in all, it made the show -- and B'way -- look sharp. We can see -- the eventual TV ad will sell a helluva lot of tix.
They did great but it is much more stunning in the theatre.

I got goosebumps watching it on tv! I cant even imagine how I am going to feel when I see it live!! I have heard "Defying Gravity" and I do think it sounds A LOT better with Kristin because it makes more sense but Idina kicked ass tonight!! And as for the score I can only judge on the songs I have heard ("No One Mourns the Wicked", "The Wizard and I", "What is This Feeling?", "Popular", "I'm Not That Girl", "Defying Gravity", "As Long As Your Mine", and "For Good")
And they all are AMAZING! I am SOOOO excited to see this show!! YAYAYAYAYAY! LOL! I am so giddy! :)
About the commercial. I've heard rumors but...tis true? And if it is...DO TELL!!!?
newyorkuniq,
HONEY, just because the songs "stuck in your head" doesn't mean they are "good." It's usually the worst garbage that get's "stuck" like all the Britney Spears / Madonna / Cher crap.

I think she meant the songs that get stuck in your head because you keep singing them... and enjoy them. Eh, who knows. Just trying to shine some light.

Alanis Morsette for the movie!! You think I'm joking...I would actually love to hear her sing some of these songs. Her and Idina have very similar qualities in their voice. Just a random thought...and Horsey- the music in this is far superior to the crap in Taboo.
How TRUE!
No it's not. TABOO'S score is way better.

Okay- thanks for clearing that up
Yeah. And, I CAN'T WAIT to see Alanis in the movie. Wow...that's gonna be hot. She's such a genius.
Horsey...you're serious? Um, well everyone has the right to their own opinions. I'm just disagree. Haven't heard the best reviews for Taboo. Not just from critics. Theatre-go-ers alike actually. Yet, like I said ... all have their own opinions.

I mean of course- what was I thinking?
This number reminded me how traditional WICKED is -- in the best sense. This is a "Don't Rain On My Parade!" type of act closer that allows a lead character at a crossroads to let loose with a musicalized statement of deeply felt conviction. It's the kind of moment that the musical theater does best -- when the elements converge. Despite the naysayers here and elsewhere, Schwartz, Menzel and Mantell have crafted "Defying Gravity" into one of those moments. It does the job 8 times a week. When sung in its entirety, the house leaps up for intermission, enthralled. Great to see the theater well captured on TV. Just doesn't happen enough, does it?

Well I have already seen the show and loved it. If I hadn't, this performance would certainly compel me to buy some tickets.
Like I said before don't call me huney. Now why don't you go gallop back to the hole you crawled out of.
