Open your eyes, racism isn't over, the struggle isn't over and it never will be.
Ha ha ha! You remind me of David Alan Grier as Louis Farrakahn. Thanks for the afternoon laugh!

Posted: 12/18/06 at 3:14pmThere is a MAJOR difference in the subject matter between Dolly and South Pacific. If you throw certain things out the window in casting South Pacific, then there's no reason to even do the show. It's not about racism. It's about telling a story about a SPECIFIC period of time.

Exactly.
I'm suddenly reminded of the line in "Voyage" -- I don't have the script in from of me, but the one from the little moment when the writer is asked to change all references to "we," "us" and "Russia" to "certain persons," and the result is absolute mush.

I am so tired of this damn topic.
Stokes already played it. Concert or not, it's better than nothing. Get the hell over it.
I MUCH rather have actors who have never played these roles before in a major production of SP.

Vocally, BSM could be one of the best Emile's in the history of SP. I enjoyed the concert with he and Reba VERY much...
Deidre as Sheila ROCKED.
While I say and firmly believe whoever can perfrom the role well should be allowed to perform the role regardless of race, creed, clor, ect., I also firmly believe that there are instances where a certain type of actor is needed.
There are roles and shows when that is a MAJOR factor... An Asian Ellen in MISS SAIGON. An African-American Emile. A white Porgy... Just not really right- it changes too much of the underlying symbolism and message. In some cases, a full rewrite of the book/lyrics may make it fit and work well, but some shows as they are- as open minded as I am and feel- just would not work with "color-blind" casting.
It's not a racisim issue, it's an "art" issue. I do not think a white actor should play a role written for a black man, but Norm as javert, BSM as Emile YAHOOOOO!!

Is Fenchurch reminding anyone else of Candida during the whole Hot Feet debate in the spring? I just had a total flashback, lol.
