If some one who had never been to the theater before asked you your opinion of a show to go see what show would you tell them to see and why?

that's currently playing?

If they're young probably Rent, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, or Wicked.

If they're older Fiddler, All Shook Up, Mamma Mia, or maybe Sweet Charity.

As Meagan said it depends on the person. But I'd probably say DRS, SPELLING BEE, ...VIRGINIA WOOLF? and if they haven't seen it yet, POTO. Despite the controversy over its quality it is an experience.

I'd say wicked for a first time movie-goer.
It's not the best, but its certainly a damn good show, and easy to get into

i dont think i'd ever suggest all shook up or mamma mia to anyone ever.

"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous

I might suggest Mamma Mia for someone who might have grown up with ABBA's music.

would totally depend on the person, their age, what kind of music or movies they like... etc.

I would suggest Hairspray for a good number of people but have one friend who is unbelievably religious and she would probably do better at a disney musical.

I'm 19 (I've been to shows with friends 16-21) here's what worked and what didn't:

Wicked- Everyone loved it.
Rent- Everyone loved it.
Little Women- Everyone loved it.
Hairspray- Didn't go over well...which I will never understand because it's amazing, but people were actually mad I made them go.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels- LOVED it, never seen people laugh so hard.
Avenue Q- Some liked, some didn't. It was the more theatre savvy that liked it.

When I'm going with people who don't generally like theatre I try to pick a fun show that you don't have to think about that is sure to "wow" people.

good input, Im not new to the theater but I always see people on this board asking what to go see. I love all the shows you have mentioned, havent seen all of them though yet but hope to sometime.

I guess to answer my own question I would say, WICKED, RENT or Phantom.

I would say Wicked or DRS. Both are great shows that are pretty much liked by all. While shows like Avenue Q and Spelling Bee may be "better" shows, for a first-time theatre goer i would suggest something "bigger" and more broadway-like.
