In My Life#0
Posted: 10/17/05 at 4:29pmHas anyone actually seen it? They were passing out cd samplers last week, and I have to say I really liked the 4 songs on it. I am considering going to TKTS tomorrow...any thoughts?

Actually no.
I must admit I had zero desire to see it; a rock opera reality show? But I have not stopped playing the sampler over the last couple of days...
I am trying to have an open mind...

Yes, people have seen it.
If no one saw it, it wouldn't be playing right now.

In My Life is certainly the worst Broadway musical I have seen in about 10 years. Possibly since Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public.
The boy-girl plot is merely mediocre although I think I heard one song that might have a life after in cabaret.
It is the framing plot that truly offends. I am quite surprised that gay rights groups are not picketing. There were times when I couldn't applaud a number. I was too much in shock that such dreck is being passed off as "Broadway".
And it isn't any good.
Do I recommend it? Yes, but for all the wrong reasons. You can learn so much from this show because so much went wrong.
Ghastly.

Posted: 10/17/05 at 5:46pmPersonally, I kind of enjoyed the show. I don't quite understand how the framing plot was offensive...it was actually quite hysterical and made the show entirely watchable. I found all the things that people on this board are complaining about (the pirates, the skeletons) to be the most enjoyable parts of the show. I think y'all are taking it WAY too seriously. But, hey, I could make a living out of liking shows that everyone else hates and hating shows everyone else likes.

Well, I did love 'Dance of the Vampires' and 'Brooklyn' for all the wrong reasons; maybe I do need to give this a go...but then, would I be the only one chuckling?
But I guess my question is: how is the music?

re: In My Life#10
Posted: 10/17/05 at 6:02pmI hate to tell you, the show's also kind of intentionally funny...I think many of you are missing the point...Yeah, it is not a perfect show (I can't think of many that have been in the past season or so), and there are a couple of scenes where it takes itself a little too seriously...but the whole heaven story is played for laughs. I say go and form your own impression. As far as the music is concerned, it's mostly ballads, which are enjoyable but can get a little repetitive. I think Brooks' uptempo songs could use some work. But, overall, a lot better than most of the recent shows I've seen (Slut, Dr. Sex, Chitty<-which I personally think is THE worst show I've ever seen...boring as hell)

Thanks kidmanboy...I do like ballads (that is what is on the sampler).
And I had no desire to see 'Chitty' after seeing it in London (and Michael Ball was out - my only reason for going in the first place!)
re: In My Life#12
Posted: 10/17/05 at 6:21pmThe music is boring and uninspired.

It's interesting how many people on this board who have claimed the show is atrocious have gone back 2, 3, 4 times. If something is really THAT bad, you would not go back.
I did see it. It was not my cup of tea, but I hear from a cast member that many changes have been made.
If nothing else, it is entertaining, and the cast works their tails off.
re: In My Life#17
Posted: 10/17/05 at 8:00pmIn My Life is easily one of the five worst shows I've ever seen, but I totally encourage you to go see it. It's theatre history in the making.

re: In My Life#20
Posted: 10/17/05 at 8:17pmI saw this show, got student rush ticket, sat front row. I wanted to apologize to the actors because my expressions were ones of disgust, confusion and anger. I felt bad because I'm sure they saw me and I didn't realize this until after one of the insane pirate numbers from Heaven. The music is great, but on a Saturday night that theatre was 1/8 full. I could have sat anywhere I wanted. Run now if you want to see if before it closes. Ridiculous plot, great music, talented actors, not so talented director, but he can write music.

Posted: 10/19/05 at 1:06amWell, I did go tonight. The orchestra was surprisingly full. Man, I am SO glad I went...it has more laughs per minute than 'The Producers!'

It wasn't bad enough to be good.
In My Life is a show whose soullessness is rivaled only by the pointlessness of the characters and the crassness of the commercial jingles that try to pass themselves off as songs.
