OK, I went to see "Primo" tonight (which was great) and in the Playbill was a flyer for "In My Life" which said "Be the first to hear IN MY LIFE with a FREE CD Sampler, available in the back of the theatre following the performance." Not sure the connection between an extremely serious one man show about Primo Levi surviving the Nazis at Aushwitz, and a musical about a contemporary relationship between a person with Tourette's Syndrome and one with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but, um....... whatever ................
So I just got home and am playing the three songs now. The CD doesn't mention who the singers are. The title track isn't bad -- a more or less decent middle of the road pop ballad sung by a female singer with a nice voice. Not a great song, but not a bad one.
But then, the next two songs are ..... wow. Easily the most cliched, awkward, embarassingly crafted lyrics I've heard since "BKLYN," paired with two very pallid and generic melodies.
"I Am My Mother's Son" is a country-flavored ballad sung by a male singer that is simply dripping with earnestness and facile sentimentality. I just can't imagine how this song could ever be effective in a book show.
And then the CD ends with "Life Turns On A Dime." Yet ANOTHER syrupy, cliched ballad. The title phrase is invoked throughout and there is an endless assortment of tortured rhymes and awkward phrasing that basically had me sitting her with my jaw dropped, speechless after the first verse. Terrible.
All three songs strike me as third rate Debbie Boone album filler, which might have worked in 1978 or something at the height of her "You Light Up My Life" (which writer/composer/director wrote) fame, but now just sounds like lame, out of touch, pathetic and utterly forgettable Muzak.
This sampler confirmed my worst fears about this show. I'll most certainly be there to see what ends up on the stage at the end of September.

Alright, the songs.
IN MY LIFE - I wouldn't be surprised if this is recorded by solo artists. It has a very nice rock melody to it...that will definitely get stuck in my head. The lyrics aren't THAT bad, either. It's a little draggy in my places, but it is quite nice. Actually, I did like the song.
I AM MY MOTHER'S SON - Starts off nicely, very country, as Margo said.. (Something I could see myself singing over and over.) Not too bad. I agree, it will be interesting how this Tourette's (or is ithe one with OCD) pulls this song off. I wouldn't imagine a Tourette's patient could finish this song.
LIFE TURNS ON A DIME - "The world is spinning with imperfect rhymes" As is the song. It's like a dictionary of words that rhyme with dime (heh, yeah, they use that rhyme, too!) The song isn't too harsh. Some of the lyrics seem trite.
In all, the music isn't too bad. Rockish, but not too overbearing. But if this is the best the show has to offer...
"Cause tomorrow begins with today"
But I don't see these songs as character songs, more like solo recording songs.
"It's raining flowers from the sky
Don't let this moment pass you by"
I can see someone turn around and say this show touched them.
Then again, people say BKLYN touched them.
And let's not start on all the people Jacko touched.

Incidentally, the advertising on the sampler and the rest of the show's marketing features images of lemons floating above a green field. Lots of lemons.
Now, perhaps they are some oblique reference to the tired old adage "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" but, if this isn't some in-joke by their marketing people, then it strikes me that they're simply BEGGING to be ridiculed.

Thernardier, it's beginning to sound like it *will* be a comedy even if the writers/director/cast don't intend it to be.

The music doesn't sound like it is supposed to be funny.
Unless, they are supposed to be acting in a comical manner while singing the songs?
BORING songs.
