Wow. A lot of hostility on this board.
In The Heights is simply a lot of hype.
It ain't all that.
Sorry.
South Pacific rocks though.
As does August Osage County.
As did Sea Farer.
As does Xanadu.
Some great shows this season. In The Heights was just not one of them. Much respect to the artists involved. They are super talented. But the show?
eh.
I mean personally I think the show is fabulous, exciting, and incredibly enjoyable but that is my opinion. And I respect yours as well. What I don't respect is bashing the show for no reason like nycboy.

I totally understand NYC Boys comment. ITH is a G rated latin version of RENT. I am not saying that as negative. It is just what it is. For some people it is a good thing and for some it is bad. It deals with exploring the people who live in a specific neighborhood and how their lives interac there. It is exactly the same frameowork as RENT.
On that note. I am sorry but the death scene and set up in ACT 2 is a mirror image to the way it happens with angel in RENT.
Noel&Cole, another cry-baby groupie. Yes we know you love the show, cry-baby. Your reasoning behind rent and ith is very vague. Its like saying that cry-baby is similar to rent and ith because it deals with people who live in a specific community and interact with each other. Only cry-baby is bland. It doesn't specifically explain how the shows are the same, or even similar. The only thing you are justifying is that they both have a death in the second act. If you go that route then lets just say they both take place in ny and during recent time periods. Yet, they still dont show a framework as to how rent is a g rated version of ith.

yes because that fact that I like CRY-BABY has anything to do with my previous post. What does that have to do with this post? Or do you just want to personally attack me?
But if you want to to know....ITH is usinig modern music and describing the family ties and relationships in a very specific New York neighborhood. With the neighborhood as almost a character in the piece. Both are aimed toward bringing in the younger demographic. Both are aiming to be about young people in NYC. And try to be the hip new thing. And the list goes on. I am not saying this to insult ITH. I enjoyed the show. I thought it was flawed and undeserving of the hype it has recieved but it was an enjoyable evening in the theatre with a lot talent. But it does a lot of similarities to RENT. Sorry if that bothers you.

And because this is the whole point of this thread to begin with. This show doing a performance on the View is fantastic. I am glad they did a good job. its a wonderful way to bring theatre to more people It's not the shows fault they had to cut down the song. They had to take the TV spot and they had to work with the rules they had. I think they picked the right number to perform though, even if they had to cut it down.
Boo! Equity removed the clip.
No, this isn’t an attack on you Noel&Cole, but you are saying you agree, therefore, trying to validate nycboy2’s remarks about ith saying “its awful” and about “robotic dancing” to refer to the TV show on telumundo called caliente and that it’s a “hispanicized version of rent” which is offensive and racist towards the show and to the Latino community and immigrants in general. You say that we are off topic, yet you responded to nycboy2’s comment which was already off the topic of the TV show performance. Now you claim to be victimized and all of a sudden are complimenting the show. You contradict yourself. You mention you don’t know what all the hype is about, but then you turn around and say it was enjoyable night in theatre. Well, since there were aspects you enjoyed, then why question they hype? Yes, I agree that cry-baby doesn’t have anything to do with this post, but I can say that you and nycboy2 enjoy a show that is not receiving as much “hype” as you call it, as ith. And when cry-baby is attacked on other threads, you are quick to respond and support it. Calling ith a “G rated Latin version of rent,” that’s not an insult to in the heights or anyone involved with the show? Your arguments say nothing about why ith is a “latin version of rent.” There are many shows on Broadway that use modern music and what makes you think the style of music is to target solely a younger generation and not aspire to be an original piece with intention’s of targeting a wider audience? Last time I checked, Rent's and ith aim was not just to bring in the younger demographic. And many shows have tried for years to bring in a younger demographic. Your arguments only explain similarities of rent and ith, not how ith is in your words "a g rated latin version of rent" There's no explanation to how ith is another version of rent. Shows having similarities is entirely different than saying a show is another version of another. Updated On: 5/30/08 at 04:41 PM
also it's far from G rated.
I thought it sounded great, Lin is seriously awesome.
Please God, let this show win the Tony for best musical.

Lyrics from No Mi Diga:
DANIELA
Bueno. You didn't hear it from me,
But some little birdie told me
Usnavi had sex with Yolanda
NINA/CARLA
No me diga!
VANESSA
Ay no! He'd never go out with a skank like that!
Please tell me you're joking!
DANIELA
Okay.
Just wanted to see what you'd say.
CARLA/NINA/DANIELA
(at Vanessa) Wooooooo!
Tell me something I don't know
Mm-hmmm-mmmm
VANESSA
What? I don't care?
ALL
Ay bendito
DANIELA
So, Nina, I hear you been talking to Benny
NINA
What do you hear?
DANIELA
I hear plenty
They say he's got quite a big...taxi
CARLA/VANESSA
No me diga!
NINA
Okay.
I don't wanna know where you heard all that
CARLA
I don't think I know what you mean
DANIELA
Carla! He's packing a stretch limousine!
G rated is the Little Mermaid.

Not directing this at anyone inparticular, but I find it kind of funny that people are making it like its a bad thing that there are similiarities with "Rent"- The have common Producers, so the possibility did exist that there would/could be similarities.
Personally, I love both shows, but find them to be very different in many aspects.
The are similarities in all forms of art. Some authors write in the same style as others. Some artists paint in the same style as others.
That makes it bad? I can tell if a painting was done by Monet, but to me, they are all beautiful, yet VERY similar.
And I think someone mentioned before the similarities of Angel and Claudia, and their eventual fates. Honestly, and maybe its just me, but I dont think they were that much alike. (other than the obvious)
I truly dont think that Lin-Manual wrote this story to be the "new hip thing"- I think the goal was to tell a story, and do it in a way that didnt stereotype his people.
