Playbill: Brecht and Weill's Happy End Will Receive NYC Concert Performance

This story came out just over a week ago, and caught my attention. I thought about it all week, and yesterday found United would let me move my flight into NYC up a couple days at no charge- which means I probably paid too much for my flights to begin with. Such a rare opportunity to hear this Kurt Weill score.

This meant I could also add a few other shows to my visit.

So I booked a ticket to this and yesterday also added a 2pm matinee of The Imaginary Invalid at Roundabout, followed by a 5pm matinee of the Heated Rivalry parody.

Shows I had already booked are The Lost Boys ( which I'm prepared to think is trash, but sometimes I have the taste of a 15 year old girl, so maybe I'll love it), Benjamin Button at the Public, NYCC's In the Heights, Jenufa at the Met, Rocky Horror, Much Ado, & A Few Horny.... err Good Men. With my new schedule I still have time to see one more show, but I don't know what???

I'm watching previews reviews of new & off-Bwy shows. But nothing has grabbed me yet.

Any suggestions?

Downstate was a big hit off broadway and is making its highly anticipated transfer to Broadway. Peter Mattei in Lincoln in the Bardo might be worth taking a chance on the world premier opera at the Met. The Heart and Wanted are two new musicals that people seem to be enjoying.

Thanks for the advice. Welcome to BroadwayWorld.

Wanted has gotten a few mixed reviews recently here. I'm back at Easter, so if it lasts I might see it then.

The Heart doesn't interest me, and I already have a ticket for one 90 minute show with Imaginary Invalid. Would rather something meatier.

I passed on Lincoln in the Bardo when it was available through Audience Rewards for the date I had available.

Edit: I'm deleting what I had to say about Downstate, as I don't want to get too political. Also some of my views are as a result of trauma from past experiences, and also growing up in the early 80's in Vancouver which was terrorized by child killer Clifford Olsen during that era.

I would just suggest that the crimes committed by the men in Downstate are a little bit more nuanced than you describe. For most of those guys, they were in actual relationships with underage men which is legally rape, but I think it’s one of the ways the playwright tries to depict them as humans rather than monsters. You might have a different feeling for it if you saw or read the play.

Other plays that are running that you might enjoy are Degenerates at Playwrights Horizons which I thought was quite good, and The Holes, The Visitors, and The Fantasticks. I’d also recommend Spelling Bee if you haven’t seen it.

Decided to use my Audience Rewards to see Buena Vista Social Club. Telecharge says it runs 130 minutes including intermission. Will go see a late jazz show afterwards.

Also, the Rockettes had a discount running through this past weekend that included no service fees on select dates and times. A Friday matinee during my visit was on the list, so booked that as well. $65 total for an Orchestra seat seems not bad. Never been before.

You might like The Lost Boys more than you expect to. I went in on a TDF ticket expecting it to suck, but I was surprised by how much I liked it. There are some very good things in it. I hope you enjoy.

SPOILER ALERT FOR DOWNSTATE:

There is absolutely NO nuance to an adult man grooming and having sex with a child. Even if that child thought they were in love with them like one of the stories in this play.

I have seen BVSC five times between Broadway and Off because I keep taking people to see it. It's just pure joy. Not one of my friends or family was disappointed.

Yes I think it is all set. Only one show with a star name I wouldn't see if they called out sick. Got my own flu & covid boosters last night (offered free where I live) to help mitigate against any potential I might get sick.

After NYC heading to Washington DC for a few nights to see Nixon in China with Renée Fleming. Not much else theatre wise going on there that interests me. Will see a stand up show by Ilana Glazer. Then after my recent Vegas trip Live Nation sent me a coupon & I used it to get a cheap ticket for R&B star Doja Cat at Capitol One Arena. If I hadn't made the plans to go to DC for the opera I probably would have tried to see the Lea Michele/Aaron Tveit concert. Also bummed that my timing doesn't work to see Stevie Wonder in either NYC or DC. But I saw once him close to 20 years ago.

Last year was my first ever visit to DC so I still have many museums to visit there. To be honest, last year I think I almost enjoyed my time in DC more. I was really surprised at the food scene - had some amazing BBQ.

After looking through listings of what the major art museums are showing this Autumn, I decided that I'll go to the Whitney one morning for their Roy Lichtenstein show. Hopefully will have ok weather and walk some of the High Line again.

One of the Zwirner galleries is showing works by Japanese artist Yo****omo Zara, so will try to see that as well.

I usually try to do at least one walking tour. I've done almost all the Broadway Up Close tours, and last year did a very good Harlem walking tour. Afterwards had lunch at the reopened Studio Museum, and spent time with the big historical retrospective they had for their reopening.

The New Museum in the Bowery has reopened since my last visit, so I might try to get there this year. It probably would have been smart scheduling wise to maybe look at one of the walking tours in the area given by the Tenement Museum. But after reading through a recent thread on the Tripadvisor NYC forum, I have instead booked a tour looking at the "Gilded Age Mansions of Fifth Avenue."

I'm back for a week at Easter, so maybe I should save the Bowery for then? But I know how much colder it can be in March!

Does anyone know about anything else interesting going on in the coming weeks that I should check out? I travel after Veteran's Day and am gone long before Thanksgiving.

definitely go to the Frick Collection. Have you ever been to the MOMA? It’s my favorite museum in the city and probably anywhere.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I've been to both multiple times.
