I am most baffled by the balcony price. I mean, 41 dollars for the balcony. I remember when it was 20 for Doubt. I am just going to wait for an offer to come out and buy my tickets with that. I was going to buy balcony, but it's just a crazy price for all the way up there.

I've NEVER heard of standing room being over $26.50. $40+ for SRO is CRAZY.
It's so crazy I just don't believe it.
It's cheaper than Equus or All My Sons, which have a top ticket price of $116.
The $135 for Orchestra aisle seats, though, is by far a new record for plays.
Maybe it's just me, but is this really going to be such a hot ticket? Both Kristin Scott Thomas and Peter Sarsgaard are great actors, but are they going to bring in the dollars? Telecharge is touting it as "The finest British production of Chekhov in recent memory," which isn't exactly a line that's going to set the box office on fire.
"The $135 for Orchestra aisle seats, though, is by far a new record for plays. "
That seems to be a new thing that all of the shows in Jujamcyn theaters are having.
Seagull, hm, wht can't we get some, THE WILD DUCK?
Brantley went absolutely berserk for it in London. And that "finest British production of Chekhov in recent memory" is not from Telecharge, it's from John Lahr in The New Yorker.
SEAGULL is one of my favorite plays, but it is hard to believe it will pull in the crowds.
there is no way I will pay 41 dollars to sit in that balcony. I felt bad to pay 20 bucks for that seat in Doubt.

IMO, we're probably going to see some nice discounts as the time gets closer. The critics can rave all they want, but Chekhov doesn't usually generate a stampede to the box office, especially with relatively unknown players on this shore. I'm definitely planning to see it, but am willing to wait -- I suspect late previews would be an ideal time.

Hmm...I'm really conflicted. I'm a huge fan of both the play and Sarsgaard, and so I want a good seat, not just A seat. I don't want to pay full price when I could have gotten the same thing for a discount, but I don't want to get stuck with a ****ty seat, or not seeing it. What kind of discount would you expect to get for during previews--Something Broadwaybox.com or TKTS? Sorry I'm new to broadway, so I'm kind of a dumbass.

I saw this show in London. It was one of the most amazing performances I've ever sat through.
That said, I paid 10 pounds ($20 American) for the seat.
I don't agree with this Broadway pricing. On the other hand, considering Ms. Scott's performance, it was really, really worth it.

Here's a good rule of thumb for commercial Broadway ticket sales.
They always sell the worst seats first.

So....should I wait for discounts or not? and if so, should I do TKTS or a website? Updated On: 7/15/08 at 11:34 PM
I'll happily pay $135 for an orchestra aisle seat to The Seagull. Anything for my boo Petey Sarsgaard...
:p
Wait for BroadwayBox discount codes and buy your ticket on the day of the performance.
you couldn't pay me that much to sit through the seagull...
am holding my breath for a decent Rush system but now I'm really worried. I don't get this though because there's no way that this is going to sell out. I love the production and the peice dearly but I also just don't get how they think this is going to be a hotter ticket than Equus or All My Sons
BwayBaby18...your loss. your missing the best production of one of the greatest plays.
Welcome To The Theater
You can sit anywhere other than the balcony in the Walter Kerr and it's fine. I don't think there's any need to worry about this one selling out. At the very least, I imagine TKTS tickets will be available for the rear mezzanine, especially before reviews come out.
From Moss Hart's Light Up the Sky:
"You want to get even with a producer? You talk him into doing an Ibsen revival".
Chekhov works too.

Ahh I need to make my final decision! What do you guys think--buy tomorrow or wait? Remember, I want good seats--If I wait for discounts will they be bad seats?
Tough call. The theater is a good one for sightlines, so...
Wait. The only bad seats in the Kerr are in the balcony.
