Yes, people use numbers in their user names all the time. I just found it odd that someone who posts here without using thier full name has a problem with someone's credibility because they, too, choose to remain anonymous. Just a bit of a double standard there, don't you think?
And yes, Rath, that is my real name.

Aren't salaries pretty much dictated by Equity? I can't believe that the producers would be able to negotiate significant salary deals for new cast members. And cutting COSTUMES to save money? That is absurd. I sure hope Mr. Shaiman sees this- I'd love to hear his take on it.
And I've seen Carly Jibson play this part twice and she was wonderful both times.
Methinks that there be some bitter queen behind this post. Nuff Said?

They have made changes to cut costs, I dont think less costumes has at all affected the quality of the show. And I really want to see this new ending, I heard a few ideas about how they could best spotlight the actors in the audience and ways to entice the crowd to stay in their seats through the ending. I think its a fun idea, but probably still has a few kinks to work out.
As for Carly and Jordan, they are both very different from the girls who did the roles before them but different isnt "bad" - Carly in my opinion comes off a lot younger than the previous girls whove played Tracy (and is younger herself) so some of her choices which include just screeching lines like "you have acne of the soul" are a lot truer to the age of her character. if you were a pissed off 16 year old, you wouldnt really be saying that line calmly. Jordan plays Amber as if shes really unaware of how cruel she is, which is again, not how its been done before, but it certainly works.
Sorry you didnt enjoy the show when you saw it, its still a favorite of mine.

All I was saying is that if he has such harsh comments and *INSIDER* accusations that he wants people to believe so badly, then tell us how you know! He doesn't have to give his full name and a whole damn autobiography. Just say how he knows all this stuff; is he in the cast? Is he a stage manager? Whatever the case may be.
If I had something like that to share, you had better believe that I would tell you exactly who I am. How can someone say things like that and expect people to believe you when you're only proof is, "Trust me"? It sounds like something Dubya would say.
Talk about being backed into a corner...

Equity dictates absolute minimum.
Carly needs to actually show up for work and learn to speak to where people can understand her.
Yes, COSTUMES have been cut to save money and to allow them to fire costumers... and producers want to cut MORE of them.

Posted: 3/9/05 at 7:39pmWell if this is true, it's ashame. I saw the show here in Denver when Carly and Bruce were touring with it. They were both great. Got to know and hang out with Carly who is just one big ball of energy. Hard to imagine she is bad in the show. Maybe she was just having a bad day when you saw it? I have an inside connection to her and Bruce. I'll have to ask if this stuff is really going on.

Posted: 3/9/05 at 7:46pmYou all crack me up!Thanks for the laughs. At least several of us have been on these boards and posting for some time, and reading each others posts, most of you I really feel are credible and enjoy your posts and your views, but this nameless chorus boy who might not still be a chorus boy and nameless if he had a better attitude) just joined today it looks like, or am I wrong, I seem to be wrong alot these days, maybe it is just the excitment of Spring Break almost being here! Anyways, again, I disagree with most of his banter, CArly is amazing!and OWNS that stage! and Jordan does the best with that role that I have seen, not really much to work with, I did like her better as Maureen on the "Rent" tour, a little bitchier!

Posted: 3/9/05 at 7:46pmFYI, its true that costumes have been cut, for sure. This is obvious to anyone whose seen the show again since it opened. They had ripped outfits in the big dollhouse and now they just wear the same outfits from the end of act 1. I also believe that velma and amber have less costume changes. I just dont see this change as making that much of an impact as to call the show bad. Updated On: 3/9/05 at 07:46 PM

Posted: 3/9/05 at 7:57pmI saw Carly in the role twice in Chicago before she went to Broadway and she was great. If I'm not mistaken, I remember Marc Shaiman praising her performance on this very board. As far as a show falling by the wayside over time, well, just just have to walk down a few blocks and see Rent to verify that it happens. I don't really get the thing about getting cheap actors with Equity standards in place. I would think they would be slapped with a lawsuit if the actors are not payed at least minimum for the role, but what do I know? I'm not an anonymous poster with an axe to grind.

Dear Nameless Chorus Boy,
Do you call yourself a "professional"?
How can you possibly bad-mouth a show when you supposedly have backstage connections? Didn't you ever hear the adage "Never carry tales out of school"?
Somehow I sense that this whole thread isn't kosher. It seems terrible odd that someone would choose this topic for his very first posting. I really think you're someone who has seen HAIRSPRAY numerous times and has posted this to vent his feelings about changes in the show and to play a joke on us.
Surely you realize that Marc Shaiman posts here regularly. I'm sure he'll have something to say about this.

I think the original poster was suggesting that hairspray is hiring virtual nobodys so they dont have to pay high salaries based on past experience... of course i think its great to bring new blood to broadway, but maybe thats just me.

I'm going to have to come to Carly's defense as well. I saw her when she stopped in Denver with the tour (and on opening night, no less) and I was bowled over by her performance. I had never seen "Hairspray" and didn't know quite how it would be done, and I loved it. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun at a show.
And the audience wholeheartedly agreed. I've never seen an audience give a standing O so quickly.

I saw the show with the original cast in December of 2002 and I just recently saw it President's Day weekend. I guess it had been too long because I didn't notice anything different. How is the ending different? Now that you mention the costumes for Big Doll House, I remeber them being different the first time, but are there any other major costume differences? I didn't notice anything.
By the way, the show was absolutely amazing. Carly Jibson was incredible. I loved Marissa Jarent Winokur, but I'd say that Jibson is even better. While I liked Harvey Fierstein more than Bruce Vilanch, Vilanch certainly held his own and was very funny. Everyone in the cast was really great. Mary Bond Davis is still tearing the crap out of her songs and she's really terrific. My only problem was with the man who played Wilbur (the name escapes me). His voice was very raspy and unpleasant and I had a hard time hearing him. He wasn't terrible, but I wasn't a fan. I nearly began crying during "You Can't Stop the Beat," I don't know why, but it was wonderful.

Posted: 3/9/05 at 8:59pmI have several friends who probably went to see it in Indy. (It was either that or go to NY unfortunately neither happened for me.) I'll ask them and see if nameless has any credibility. It was probably at the Murat.

Posted: 3/9/05 at 9:10pmSorry to hear this. I've yet to see the show and rumor has it that it will be stopping in my hometown next season. It's a shame that if you are unable to get to NYC to see the original cast of a show that the quality suffers as the years pass!

Posted: 3/9/05 at 9:24pmAll I have to say is I was very disapointed when the Jail outfits where cut for the second act. Casue it was just part of the magic of the show.. but I'm not going to speak ill about anyone involved with any of it. I still like the show it's self..

OH MY GOSH. That's what was missing.
I knew something was missing but could not figure it out.
I have to say that i thought Carly was magical as Tracy.
I also loved the women playing amber. The only real disaster in the show was Jackie Hoffman was missing.
Otherwise it was magnificent.
Sorry to ruin your parade. But i loved it and i saw the show a few weeks ago.

Posted: 3/9/05 at 9:39pmI didn't like Hairspray, not because it felt "off" or things looked cheap, it just didn't appeal to me as a show. But I can see how it could appeal to many others. I liked most of the tunes in it (I could listen to the music of Hairspray, but I wouldn't want to sit through the show again) I was less of a fan of the book.

Sorry, with a name like "wickedfan" a criticism like "I wasn't a fan of the book" has zero credibility.
And listen, as a homosexual male, I LOVE bitchy gossip and if its posted anonymously (which is basically how GOSSIP is spread) I always think "oh it's probably not true, but isn't it a great read?" That's what I miss about the movie magazines of yesteryear. The thing is, good gossip has to be dishy and it has to make sense, even if, ESPECIALLY if it isn't true!
Which is why the original post fails as gossip.
