Oh god.
Are you people really this dumb?
You're sitting here debating what an "insider" who just joined today is saying? He just joined today folks. And this is is first..and I bet..only post. And guess what..he'll probably slink away under his rock like all the rest of our "insiders".
chourshack, unless you'd like to give us EXACT specifics (number of costumes, how much money is being taken away, who is being fired) then shut up. You sound like a bitter little chorus boy who didn't get a call back.

Not that I am agreeing or disagreeing with any points of view that NCB has. Like I said a few post ago I am not saying any because I don't have anything to say, again I still like hairspray and what it was, and the story that it is I like the show.
BUT The costume cutting did happen on both the tour and the Bway show.. if you follow the show you can notice the changes. Half of Amber's dresses where taken out all the the 'Big Doll House" outfits are no longer ripped. mother daughter day the girls where the normal Council member dresses not the ones that they use to wear. So they did cut the costumes but anyone could have noticed that and while I liked the costumes I don't think that it killed the show on bway like was said.
Again I have no point of view on this topic really I just know that the costume fact is true.

Fine..costumes are cut.
But what about chorussmucks claims about management abuse?
A few costumes are the least of his claims.

Posted: 3/10/05 at 2:17amVery strange series of posts by the original anonymous poster who just joined today to spread these somehow only slightly credible tales. I can only say that having seen and enjoyed Marisa's performance in L.A. last August, I was totally bowled over by Carly's even better one in N.Y. in September. I've told people who loved Marisa that Carly gave the superior performance and though they can't believe that anyone could top Marisa, in my opinion Carly did. It's 9 months later, so who knows. Maybe she's slacking off??? But I somehow doubt it. And Joshua, that's your own picture as your avatar, I believe you posted earlier, so you are much less anonymous than most posters here, as am I (it's me to the left.) Anyone seen Carly very recently to attest to how great she is?

Gonna have to totally agree with nameless.
There is a certain large black woman who is the BEST thing left in that show. See how much longer they keep her. See how much they are looking out for the 'inegrity' of the show over the inegrity of their cashflow. Oh that's right, they aren't.
And another thing--even before they cut costumes, they cut the two spotlight guys that were placed in the boxes above the mezzanine on the sides. Now they just use two weaker spotlights from the lighting booth way in the back. Little things you may not notice at first, but it adds up. Remember when you first saw Hairspray how at the beginning of Act 2 there were sirens going off and the spotlights scanned the first 10 rows of the audience as if they were police search lights? Yea, that doesn't happen now.
Cuts to lighting, cuts to costumes, messy dancing, little energy, no spark....It is a completely different show now than even one year ago. Not trying to stir **** up here, just telling it like it is.

I love Mary Bond Davis. Not only is she a fantastic performer she is super nice.
Oh and Pennylou, Jenn was great as Penny. I still thought that Kerry Butler was the best Penny.
That voice! Jenn blew me away in Frog and Toad.

This is all hear-say B.S.
I'm noticing a sense of bitterness with the original poster (Was nameless fired from the show, maybe?)
Carly Jibson was definately on the night I saw her. Her words were clear and I understood everything she said. She has a wonderful stage personality as well as energy that works well in the show. Her voice is better than Marissa, and her presence is better than Kathy (Not that I don't like Kathy, but while she was doing the show at night, and the soap during the day, she became very fatigued and her energy level was down.)
As for them dancing in the aisles...I recently saw the show, and the only time people were in the aisles in the finale were when they were getting to the stage.
It's different to have an opinion then to state facts on why you hate the show. Just because you make a negative post does not mean that fans of the show will turn away, or those who have not seen it will stay away because you told them to. Who the hell are you, anyway?

Justice,
Just to let you know (not being nasty here), the 'dancing in the aisles' that the chorus boy referred to is fairly new. After Tracy says "Everybody, let's dance!!!" Most of the ensemble members (the black girls, etc.) go down into the two center aisles of the orchestra and literally perform the encore (motion of the ocean, rain from above, etc.) in the aisles.

OK..it's been 24hrs since chorusshmuck laid these lies down.
Why haven't you come back to answer the statements you've presented as fact?
As justic said quite correctly...this post and chorusshmuck are b.s.

Posted: 3/10/05 at 2:55pmWhen I saw the show 2 weeks ago, there were 2 REALLY large ladies sitting in front of me, in fact, they asked me since the seat next to me was empty, could they put their coats there cause there was no room for them in their seats, anyways, just before the "you can't stop the beat" one of them starts to get up and an usher rushes up and tells her to sit down, and they have this big talk about how she needs to go to the bathroom,as I am trying to see over them to the stage, and she finally sits down about the time everyone runs into the aisles, what a dumbass! But I liked the dancing, I do miss the costumes, at least on Broadway you expect to see it all! Meaning costumes and lighting and such. I do not mind undrstudies, I enjoy seeing them all, if they are a swing or understudy, then I assume they must be good!and I know they must be thrilled to be getting the opportunity and exposure of doing the role. Again, I think all the leads on Broadway are excellent, I am sure they have their "not so good days" or people do not like the way they have chosen to portray the role, while others think it is a better choice, we all have opinions. The Tour just got new people I think in Indiannapolis, all the cast who started out the Tour originally have now gone with the exception of Keala and 2 dancers I think. Happy Spring Break everyone!

Posted: 3/10/05 at 5:28pmFindingNamo- I knew my name was going to come back and bite me in the ass. True, Wicked's book is no better than Hairspray's, but I don't know. It just felt like there was an unbalance between the quality of the score and the quality of the book to me. Again, it's all about opinions and I'm not stating anything as a fact. And I said before I can see how others would like the show, I just didn't.

Forgive me for having a life and not trolling this website 24/7. Why live in New York if you don't take advantage of it?
As far as micing in the audience goes, micing 28 singers in the aisle provides too much feedback between the mics and the speakers. The sound system becomes a mess.
Yes, the tour just recieved new people. VERY good people.
As far as fans turning away, it's like with any fan. If you make a nagative comment about something they like, they will defend it regardless.
And no, they aren't lies at all.
Marc Shaiman has read this. Notice how on other negative Hairspray posts, he has always commented.. playful or otherwise.. but he hasn't said a word about this. Because it is the truth.
I have recieved several PMs from audience members agreeing with me.. obviously these posters have not wanted to publicly state what they told me. Perhaps they will let me pull a few quotes and post them without their usernames attached....

Or perhaps he's more mature and doesn't feel the need to defend things that don't need defending.

Right, because we'd all take your word that they were actual quotes from your PMs. Here. I'll get started from ones I've received.
"Nameless is Carol Channing"
"The government passed a law forbidding the use of the word 'internet'"
"Kristin was in Wicked last night"
Those are just some of the recent PMs I've gotten. Of course I didn't publish the names because I didn't want to invade their privacy.

I am the first person who will come to the defense of Hairspray, as it is one of my favorite shows. But I take it that "nameless" was posting something of interest. There have been some changes made to the show in which he feels is taking away from the production that originally played on Broadway and the tour. The Tony was awarded to the production that opened, and for some reason it doesn't reflect the production playing now. Yes, the script and music might be the same, but the overall look that was once there, is no longer. I am looking forward to the tours run in DC this summer, to see the changes for myself. My sister saw the production in Atlanta recently and she loved it, but then again, she had nothing to compare it to.
I can understand wanting to make cuts to the set and costumes on the road to make load in/out easier, but I don't understand why the costume cuts had to be incorporated into the Broadway production (as well as changes to lighting, etc.)
With regards to Carly Jibson, in the times that I have seen her I have absolutely loved her performances. I liked her characterization and her singing voice. As much as I liked Marissa, I wish Carly was on the recording. Granted she's been out some of the times I have seen the show, but her understudy was very good as well. I liked Jordan as Amber, too. All the Ambers have been different, but they were all very good. I will say that my favorite Penny has been Jenn Gambatese.
Just my thoughts.

Posted: 3/11/05 at 3:58pmIn response to gays liking bitchy gossip.... I am a gay male and I am not into it!!! Also as far as the miking is concerned, when I saw Lion King in Denver, the cast entered twice from the rear of the theatre and stood in the aisles of the orchestra section and sang. They were miked. And it wasn't a mess. And there were a lot of them! Just my 2 cents!
