i wouldn't be surprised if the reason Bernadette wasn't nominated was because she had just gotten her tony for Song and Dance two years before, and maybe people wanted to give other actresses the honor of being nominated.

Posted: 12/30/08 at 11:00pmI never understood the need to bring Snow White and Sleeping Beauty on for literally 3 seconds of stage time. I noticed they didn't even get a curtain call at the end. Why is that?

Weren't these referenced in the reprise of Agony?

In the productions I've been in or seen, those roles are usually doubled by actors who play the Giant, Cinderella's Mother, etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the recent revival, they were just eliminated completely.

I actually think its a little bit more than just THAT. I always took it to be how bad people can still get what they want in the end. These two men are lusting after other women while they are married. They are not noble men, and they still get the girl in the end. Have you ever met those people who always achieve what they want and seem to have the best luck, but they just don't deserve it? That is what Sleeping Beauty and Snow White always symbolized to me in "Into the Woods." I hated that they were cut in the revival, because I felt that it touched on a part of society that really exists.

Posted: 12/31/08 at 12:08pmUnless the Tony rules were significantly different in the 80s, there's no process of "submitting" people's names for consideration -- I'm sure it was just that the limited run hurt Bernadette's chances of being nodded, plus she'd won a couple years before, plus Joanna Gleason was so damn good. The Baker's Wife is actually not better than either the the Baker or the Witch, but Gleason was just so good.

Those roles are usually played by the woman playing Little Red's Grandmother. Or they were, in the original production. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty were understudies.

But there is, depending on how the show was billed on opening night. If there were no names above the title, then technically nobody in the show is initially eligible to be nominated for best actor/actress. At that point they are all eligible for featured actor/actress. The producers can then petition to have one or more be considered for best actor/actress.
Does anybody out there have the original program to verify who, if anybody, was billed over the title?
