Hmm, if only there were some magical way for you to not have to see it anymore. Wait...there is...stop going to see it! Problem solved. You're welcome.

Could it be because you took them to a terrible production? When done well, this musical can be magical. I'm tired of productions trying to be "cool" and different by using gimmicks that quickly get old.
Everyone gets so offended on here now lol relax.
well I'm going no matter who is cast!...seeing any Sondheim in the magnificent Hollywood Bowl is worth it to me...
i would love Catherine Zeta-Jones as the witch, or Vanessa Williams, who has already done some Sondheim at the Bowl with Sondheim on Sondheim...but i am sure the casting will be all Hollywood, and that's ok!
My intuition is screaming James Corden...
Cool! I guess this will warrant a quicky trip to LA and hang with friends for the weekend 7/26-28 and see Woods!

Who started this rumor that Miss Zeta Jones can actually sing? "Send in the Clowns" certain doesn't count and I have it on excellent authority that her vocal track for the film CHICAGO was recorded one note at a time.
Yet, she is nominated here for everything from GYPSY to MADAMA ****ing BUTTERFLY!
Come on Zeta Jones sung Clowns better than Glynnis did. At least one was actually singing!
Catherine Zeta Jones is an established actress and I believe she more than proved herself with Night Music. She is perfectly capable of delivering a full musical performance and leading a show. The one I attended was lovely and her voice, although not Bernadette Peters', was more than fine. She made up for any issues with acting and personality, just like Glynis (and SO MANY performers) do on Broadway. The witch has a few money notes, but is it really that hard to sing? A lot of it is carried by personality and acting.
And, I have it on good authority that 99% of super-polished recorded singing is actually pieced together from a ton of different takes. In fact, that's how the music industry works now and has for the last few decades. Why would Chicago have been any different? The only people I believe might be one-take wonders are Cher and Tina Turner, and even that I think may be a bit of mythology. Even Broadway soundtracks are starting to become very doctored these days. A certain witch who is more often suggested for everything than Zeta Jones had LOTS of studio help herself.
To get back on topic, what about James Corden reprising his performance? I think his was the one I liked best from the film. It's a long shot, but what about Rachel Brosnahan for Baker's Wife? Wouldn't that be something...

Hollywood Bowl shows on Friday and Saturdays have a published start at 8:30 PM, more realistically 8:40-45 after the late start and the National Anthem is done and the Bowl has a hard curfew stop of 11 PM. You have less than 2.25 hours, including intermission.
Most of the musicals are "trimmed." However, you've picnic'd, had wine, dessert at intermission and are at a beautiful venue under the stars. Just enjoy the show as presented and enjoy what is shown vs what was not.. All of the "famous" songs will be there, and the performers are generally great. However, if your favorite song is a "less famous" song by a non-lead character or you love the book of the musical, the Bowl version may not be for you.
Not to stereotype, but "less serious" musicals seem to do better in the venue. I am not sure how Into The Woods will fare. Obviously the first act will be fine.
I hope they keep the summer musical tradition alive for years to come.
Now who wants to join the pre-concert potluck picnic.

The Hollywood Bowl always uses a large handful of cast members that have all ready done the show, since the rehearsal period is so short. I'm betting on Vanessa Williams as the Witch and if they can get him... James Cordin. They will prob do some kind of stunt casting for the wolf and a youtube star or disney kid to be Little Red!

Gaveston, I know you have commented on the note for note thing before, but is it possible your friend had made a mistake when relaying the story to you? Rene Zellweger has admitted she isn't a singer, she chose not to perform live at the Oscars, while Zeta-Jones did, and Zeta-Jones has more than just Night Music as a live musical theatre credit. Zellweger seems the more likely candidate for being put together note by note. I know I have said the wrong name when telling stories before, and have noticed others do the same. I'm not saying that the story is wrong, or not true. It just seems like some confusion is within the realm of possibility given that Zeta-Jones seems to have little to no problem performing live on stage.

This may not be perfect, but doesn't seem like a performance that needs to be stitched together note by note. Live Oscar's Performance.
