It's pretty frustrating how quick people are to discount anyone who has had a career elsewhere before coming to Broadway. I can understand in certain situations, it makes sense to doubt a casting, but this one does not fall into that category, in my opinion. It's not like Joey has never acted in theater before. It's not like he hasn't done WELL and proven himself. He has. He can sing, he can dance, he's cute, he actually LOOKS a bit more like he'd be in college than pretty much anyone else currently in Wicked. I think he'd be pretty damn good.
Stunt casting DOES exist, but not everyone person who had a singing or otherwise popular career falls into the category of stunt casting. And even if Joey IS stunt casting, as I'm sure many think he is, at least he's GOOD. Why's everyone all worked up into a tilly?

Posted: 5/18/04 at 12:03amI've seen good stunt casting... and I've seen bad stunt casting, just like I've seen good regular casting and bad regular casting. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'd like to see it for myself first before I judge it either way.

"but this role seems to need someone "hunky" and Joey McIntyre does not fit that description"
And Norbert does?? He did nothing for me. Now Taye...yeah. I have no opinion of Joe either way. I will wait until I see him.

I think it's cool that Joey McIntyre is joining Wicked. He's a good actor and I'm glad he's going to be on Broadway. I enjoyed him in tick, tick...BOOM! Also, Joey Fatone was great in RENT in my book.
Mistress- Wasn't Matt Morrison in a boy band? HAHA

I have seen the Fantasticks movie (its been a while) Joe McIntyre (as he was billed) was alright. I might pop in the DVD later on. What was really cool is the fact that Joel Grey played the girls father.

...yes, Norbert is hunky and his style worked for me. Casting "Joe" McIntyre seems better suited for Vegas, than Broadway. Call me a purist.

Stunt casting has been around in the theater for ages. Please remember some of the following "stunts"
June Allyson replacing Julie Harris in FORTY CARATS
Arthur Godfrey replacing Paul Ford in NEVER TOO LATE
Sergio Franchi taking over from Raul Julia in NINE (the original)
Mimi Hines replacing That Streisand Woman in FUNNY GIRL
Anne Baxter following Lauren Bacall in APPLAUSE
Angela Lansbury doing THE KING AND I for three weeks while Yule Brynner and Constance Towers vacationed.
Zsa Zsa Gabor replacing June Allyson in FORTY CARATS
Raquel Welch replacing Lauren Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR
Liza Minelli taking over for Gwen Verdon in CHICAGO (the original) for 10 weeks
...any of the ladies who replaced TGC in TWHM--especially Pearl Bailey.
Sometimes these stunts worked, other times they didn't. I'm sure that's what's happening now on Broadway.

Posted: 5/18/04 at 9:56amFirst of all, to say that JM is bad casting bc the "role requires a hunk" is absurd. About the only descrpition that does NOT come to mind when thinking of Butz, is "HUNK". And furthermore, he gave even the demi-God, Esparza a run for his money in Tick Tick boom. So, what's the big deal? I'm the first person to bitch and moan about stunt casting, but lately the casting of B'way regulars has been , shall we say, far less than inspired and/or insightful, so how can JM be any worse than...well, I won't name names.

Posted: 5/18/04 at 12:42pmwe finally rented the Fantasticks movie recently and I thought he was just awful in it. (for that matter, so was El Gallo)...I liked the girl in it and Joel Grey as one of the fathers was OK,,but otherwise it pretty much sucked

Maybe the producers will get Debbie er, DEBORAH Gibson to play Galinda, and then have 80's sensation Tiffany join the cast as Elphaba once Idina leaves. That would be swell!!!
Ugh--and this is the show that will beat Avenue Q for Best Musical?
