I've loved Sutton in everything I've seen her in (Millie, Little Women, Drowsy, and Shrek) and think she'll be phenomenal. No, she's not a perfect fit for the role, but that's what makes for an interesting performance. And she absolutely can pull off sexy/ glamorous. She did in Drowsy.

Where is this "sexy" thing coming from?
"Reno is a sexy and sharp nightclub singer.??????
But if that's what you want, you should have seen Foster at Feinstein's.
She is certainly sexier than Merm or Pone in her own way.

Exactly. Ethel Merman was NEVER what anyone could call sexy. She was a foghorn-voiced belter, not a hot mama. During the period the show was on Broadway, Ginger Rodgers was a hot, sexy performer, Lois Moran was a hot ice blond, Clair Luce was a hot, sexy, shimmering dancer but the Merm was that strange-looking former secretary with a voice that could be heard a block away.

There is some yahoo going off on me on Youtube because he was ranting & raving on how much better Sutton is going to be then that "vulgar LuPone". I posted a comment about saying "If you thought Patti was bad, then wait to see Sutton ham this role up."

You would have thought I had insulted the man's mother. I post the screencap of his PM if anyone wants.

Why is anyone even TRYING to speculate how this will be? No one has seen it! They haven't even begun to rehearse! No matter who was cast, someone was going to b*tch. Ethel Merman would never be described as sexy. And while Patti acted sex appeal, as Violet Weston would say, she's "about as sexy as a wet cardboard box." The show is a musical comedy. Reno is supposed to be funny sexy. It's not like the "hot pants" scene is supposed to turn up any heat.

There is no cause for concern because there is absolutely nothing to go on.

I've enjoyed Sutton as a performer and will withhold any concerns/judgments until this show actually opens. In my opinion, she is a wonderful performer. I can see why people might not like her, but you cannot deny that she has had a heck of a career originating numerous roles. Hopefully she will surprise us in this role.
