Concerned as in she may catch the flu? I don't think the producers give two hoots about anyone's concerns on this board.
Some of you need to spend more time responding to the actual topics on this board and less time picking apart word choice. Yeah I can't sleep, I have hives, and I'm on extra stength blood pressure meds because of this casting choice.
Seriously.
I chose "concerned" because if I used more aggressive words the Sutton Foster mafia would be all over me. Instead I get the word choice police.
And my Gershon comment was more saying that a name who was also talented could work for this role. I just seems a weird role to go for a stage name for. If marquee value isn't important to Roundabout for this production, how about Carolee Carmello, Marin Mazzie, Katie Finneran, Mary Test, or the 100 other talented, stage name actresses. Foster's not age appropriate, type appropriate, and I don't think vocally appropriate (her forced vibrato is particularly "concerning" to me).
Bad choice but it is what it is.
I saw it years ago with Patti Lupone. There was a Reno Sweeney
I thought she was the worst thing about Encores' Anything Goes.
Did I miss something? When did Sutton Foster do an Encores staging of ANYTHING GOES?
I don't understand why people are getting so upset about this casting decision. The qualifications for playing Reno are being sexy, goofy, and having a great belt. Sutton has all of those qualities. It's not like she's playing Lady Macbeth. She'll be fine.
And to the person who said she has no sex appeal--are you kidding?
"There was a Reno Sweeney". You missed the words "somewhere in there."
I, too, saw that version and I thought Patti LuPone was doing her same shtick. I hate that shtick. She can't be understood without sheet music to follow along and it gets worse every year. She seems to be chewing every word she isn't swallowing. I just do not get or admire her singing.
We get it, you hate Patti LuPone.
Merm was 26 was she created the role making Lea Michelle the only name, age appropriate singer/actress, I can think of.
Can we at least give her a chance to perform the role and then make all the critical comments?? I understand no matter what, someone is going to be unhappy but, give the girl a break. Is she the perfect choice for Reno? Not really. But she is a talented actress who will probably prove all of us wrong come February.
I personally find this show dull (but enjoy the music), but Sutton is wrong for the role. As many have said, she doesn't bring anything to WOW based on her self. I've always felt Reno needs to have that whole brassy & larger than life feel going on, and she does not have that.
Shes sings typically (not the best singer ever either), she dances very well (but not the best), and acts decently (not the best). I don't think she's untalented, but for a show that's not already eye popping exciting (I've only seen a regional production, however), why cast someone whose only able to thrive in the material not bring something exciting about it?

Now I have just seen her perform on the Tonys and on YouTube, but I think Sutton has the talent to be a vibrant Reno-- especially watching her in the "Show-Off" number from CHAPERONE. I have always enjoyed watching her perform, and can see her in the role more than I could see Reba, who was originally mentioned for the project at an early point.

BAhahahahahahahahahahha i laughed so hard when you suggested Gina Gershon not only in another Broadway show with SINGING! and alot of singing but suggesting that she is more fit to play any role more than Sutton Foster. The only role Ms. Gershon would ever be better at than Ms. Foster would be Waitress #2.
At least she isn't, for lack of a better phrase, selling out this time. IE: Young Frankenstein and Shrek.
I think she'll be terrific.
FINALLY some adult supervision.
FINALLY some adult supervision.
I think a lot will depend on who else is cast in the piece. If the rest of the actors are much better suited to the style of Anything Goes than Foster, she may be out of her league.
I hope only the best for the production. I love the show and would love to see a dazzling production back on Broadway.
For those of you doubting Sutton's abilities, you must have not seen her perform "Morning Person" in SHREK. Charming, well-danced, vocally great.
Let's hope for the best. We shall see!

Yes Sutton can sing & dance, we all know this, but that not what the issue. Reno is a sexy & sharp night club singer. Nothing about that role brings Sutton Foster to mind.
F*CK THE HATERZ I LUV SUTTON 4ever
Sh*tty troll is sh*tty.
Reno is a sexy & sharp night club singer.
You mean, like the original Reno Sweeney?

At the end of the day, which actresses wouldn't want to play two lead roles in two of the biggest shows of their respective seasons. It's not "selling out", it's earning a living.
