I figured this thread would be about a discussion of a director cramming in shows to direct, which may lead to questionable outcomes. Instead of a logical debate of what we believe and can see coming out of this, half of it has turned into people bickering and complaining over a post Foanatic made.
The first half was actually really getting somewhere and the responses were enjoyable to read, can we just get on with that again instead?
"Except for ASSASSINS, all of those shows received mediocre to poor reviews."
yes, but reviewers aren't the ones who matter most. it's the general public, the ones who are buying the tickets, sometimes more than once.
there are a million shows who got poor reviews but ended up doing well in the box office anyway.
I hate to say this but it is quite common on this board for one person to attack another person and take the thread off on a tangent without thoroughly reading and understanding the original post.
ACKKK
While Mantello is very busy, he has managed to receive multiple nominations in one year, so I guess he must be doing something right. As for whether he will be overwhelmed by this latest rush of work, only he knows the answer to that.
>>And you're right.... no body likes it, which is why it's been at 100% for at least two years.
Um...that wasn't me. That was Sykes.
I wondered why you thought I was attacking you...reread my posts, dude!
>>I know what Mantello is capable of, that is why I'd rather not see him overdo it. Because, I'd rather see one really great performance, than half a dozen mediocre ones.
I thoroughly agree with that, by the way. And Laura looks pretty in your avatar. And now I am done.

FOA, why is everything you say about Mantello's work based solely on critical reviews? Since when does a good Times Review mean your show is an artistic success?
I mean if you like theater but listen to critics that closely...
Also, Mantello worked for years before the stuff you mention here, he's acting in plays like Angels in America and he also directed reveral plays like Take Me Out (which wasn't that long ago) and Love!Valour!Compassion! which he also directed for the screen using most of the original cast.
Also, how is doing too much work a bad thing? This business is as risky for directors and other collaborationists as it is for performers, even if you are great, there are enough great directors in New York right now so that if you're not careful and make sure your name stays out there, you'll disappear form the list.

It seems funny to me that no one on this board can say anything remotely negative about any broadway show/performer/director without being completely lambasted.
To me Mantello is kind of a hit and miss director. I could care less whether or not his productions make money (Really, how does this affect me as an audience member?)
To me, he seems perfectly capable of handling multiple productions at the same time. I'd just rather his work featured anything more than just surface level exploration of the material.
I'm all for him directing these four productions. I'm just hoping they have more in common with Assasins than Wicked, Rain, or Odd Couple.
