And the absence record, while more unfortunate than anything else, is... noticeable.
In the past her attendance record has been notable for being impeccable. But it is the first time for her being on tour like that, right? So for her first national tour she is doing this ridiculously demanding leading role. It takes time to acclamate to touring. It is unfortunate; I can't imagine being on tour and being sick like that. She knows people were counting on her.
And you do make a good point about Idina. But obviously it's really the fans from RENT and Wicked that stand out. While Idina has done both kinds of roles, Julia opts for (or gets offered) only the more mature ones. Neither is bad, but Idina gets more publicity and backlash for it.
I still see no purpose in there not being matinee( or if you do it like piazza, evening) alternates for both elphaba and glinda in all 3 productions. The score is taxing, and if christine in phantom, and aida could have alternates so can they. however i will say of victoria that my disappointment in not seeing julia faded by the end of the wazard and i (i saw victoria's very first performance as elphaba)so suck it up and let the poor woman get better.
Does Celine Dion cancel her show? No. If she worked at McDonald's and had a broken arm do you think she would be out. I don't think so. I think actors should do whatever they can to be in. It isn't that hard, vocal cords can come back. Why is everyone making such a big deal? Actors have an easy job...try being a janitor then complain.

Um. Chad2...
I'm guessing you're not a musical theater actor and have no intention to be in this profession...because you would very much know that if you're sick and keep pushing it...there's a damn good chance you could ruin your vocal chords for awhile or maybe even for life... and directors/producers won't care if you do, they'll kick you out on your sorry ass. For Actors on broadway... their vocal chords are basically their money makers...it's not something you take lightly and you take care of them as much and as well as you can.
"Actors have an easy job" obviously not one yourself. Please, go rehearse for a show, perform it for 8 days a week then tell me how easy it is and how you are not emotionally and physically drained. You can also add in how much research you have to put into a character and extra time memorizing lines, extra music and dance rehearsals. Oh yeah, Actors have it so easy... easiest job in the world.
so... I came here to post this...
When Julia was in Cleveland her voice went out during Wizard and I and she was out for 3 days... she has been battling illness for awhile, and when she came back, she was so much stronger. It's not the woman's fault that she keeps getting sick, Wicked is a demanding show especially for the role of Elphaba and when you're traveling all over the place your body might not react well. She was out for Rosie's cruise, which she informed us at the stage door...
and posts like these is why Julia said plainly "I avoid all those boards".

maybe she just get robotic chords.
you cant compare musical theatre performers with someone like celine dion. she has her name to make her money, she could sing sick as a dog and only half of a show and ppl would pay to see her. performers in this business go from job to job, knowing that at any performance some potential casting agent or producer with a new show could be in the house and watching them. if they go on sick and give a poor performance or damage their cords completely, thats it. chance gone, job gone. they're not machines. and they're not famous enough to not care if they're sick. in fact, they HAVE to care. you better bet that every morning when they wake up, most will check their voice to see how its doing. its that important. and its also that important that they rest when they need to rest, and take off when they need to recover and they should not be faulted for that.

Chad-
Wow.
just. Wow.
I'd never even thought of that. That's incredible.
What a new and refreshing idea, please pitch that to Broadway Actors, I'm sure they'd want to purchase some immediately.

Wicked_fan- I think it's just easier to just ignore posts like that.

So true. Can you imagine being in this show, working your ass off, being sick which you have no control over, and then getting criticized for it? I wouldn't read it either. Like she said, "you guys don't know what you are talking about." This is just ridiculous.
I saw Julia's second show...and at first I was sad because I wanted to see Stephanie, but I wasn't disappointed! I've seen Julia a few times in WICKED and EVERYTIME she has been very stellar. Maybe she doesn't "act" the part the same way I'd perceive it (perception is in the eye of the beholder, remember?) but she certainly was never flat on a note. And as for her and Kendra etc. not having a big fan league...i am a Kendra fan true and true, but unlike when i was 13 and would scream my obsession with whatever boy band etc. i liked, I now just admire and respect her. I think she and JLT and Stephanie (definitely) have plenty of fans, they just present themselves differently sometimes...
Wow, I got to whitness a real idot first hand. Did you read the whole thread. And do you know anything about the voice. If you abuse it WILL go downhill it WILL get worse and the performer WILL lose jobs. It is not Julia's job to end or put a stop to her carrer so you can say you saw her. And second of all, if some who worked at McDonalds or as a Janitor had and injury or sickness that stopped the form performing their job, or if performing their job while sick would prevent them from preforming their job in the future chances are the boss would let them stay home.
Sparkless, it's interesting that you should say that. I always cosidered her take on the charcter more layered than any other I'd seen. Interesting. . . . .

Ah, the irony.

Good. Good for you.

Julia doesn't have loyal fans? Are you serious? First things first. I think Julia is taking a bad rap on this thread.
With that said, I also think she's vastly over-rated. For whatever reason BWW is the Julia Murney Fan Haven. I truly believe she's the one performer (even pre-Wicked) whom no one can dare offer even constructive criticism about or her fans and/or family members come at people with a pitchfork. I've never experience the wrath because I have never talked about her until now, but I've certainly witnessed it. I've even seen a poster vehemently defend her honor on ATC with such regularity and verocity it makes me wonder who that person really is. It's certainly alright for people to giggle and throw putdowns at Idina, Kristin, Eden, etc. but the moment Julia is mentioned in a slightly negative way, her fans pout and want to take their marbles home. Just my .02.
And I do wish her a speedy recovery. My beef isn't with her but the claim that she doesn't have loyal fans. Some of her fans and/or friends/family are a little overzealous in her defense and could stand to take it down a notch or two.

I've yet to see any pitchforks, personally. I don't particularly think Julia's fans are in either extreme. Just sayin'.

There is a strong possibility that you just might be the dumbest person I have ever encountered... ever.

Compared to many other Broadway stars, her fans are tame. Maybe people won't put her down yet because she hasn't had any backlash yet, while others have had a lot. Maybe she will become the next Idina. But I hope not.
No one is standing outside the theaters with candelight vigils because of her illness, so yeah, Julia fans aren't that extreme. As for the hostility, maybe her fans just know how to make a more intelligent counter-argument than the teenybopper Wicked fans you're used to.

The thing I've noticed with Idina fans is that on this board anyway (I don't care for her or any other individual performer enough to visit any performer shrines/websites), for the most part (I emphasize for the most part) I haven't seen any hostility when others inevitably tease them. They seem to shrug it off and continue with their conversation.
Julia seems to have a small circle who -habitually- lash out when anyone dares to criticize her in any minute way.
But, uh, if I know anything by reading this board the last 3 or so years, I'm not expecting anyone here will to agree with me re: my Julia comment.
ETA: I don't doubt that Julia or many other stage performer have intelligent fans. However, I don't think some fans are demonstrating intelligence nor are they respecting other's opinions when they routinely gang up to shut down other people's because they can't handle constructive criticism about one of their favorites.

Nope. Nice try. The kneee jerk sarcasm was textbook, but come on, surely you can do better! There's no hostility or tag teaming involved! Round up some of your friends to come back and flame me (or anyone else who says her hairclip is out of place) and then your post will be more in line with what I've routinely seen!

I'm a huge fan of Julia, but she IS starting to get a bit of an overzealous fanbase that is probably a turn off to a lot of people. And some of them think they're her best friend or something, which is just creepy.
So...KuhnKrazy, I know exactly what you mean. And I am a Julia fan.

KuhnKrazy, I have to respectfully disagree. Perhaps your additional year of time spent on this site has caused you to feel differently, but I've posted quite a few times that I'm not a fan of Julia Murney's voice and have never taken any serious slack for it. Perhaps the claws come out if and when people immaturely bash her, but I've personally never seen any cases of overzealous Julia fans.
I do have to mention that I love your username, assuming it's a reference to the marvelous Judy Kuhn. Although I like her as Cossette, I felt her talent really shone through as Florence in the OBC of Chess.
ETA: Hah -- BroadwayGirl107 and I posted at the same time. Maybe it's just a case of noticing things about a fanbase you belong to as opposed to general indifference.
