Alan Menken and Glenn Slater collaboration....a show that got very mixed reviews with a loosely based religious theme (and family friendly).
It also seems like it was rushed to Broadway very fast. I got tickets, but have a bad feeling about it.
I did not like Sister Act. And that's one of my all time favorite movies.

Sister Act did not rush to Broadway by any stretch of the imagination. It premiered in Pasadena in October 2006. I don't think 4 and a half years later to Broadway is rushing... especially considering how many rewrites the thing went through.

Posted: 2/29/12 at 12:28pmHmmmm. It's hard to say but I guess we have to. It makes no sense to wait until the show is actually open, much less see the thing before we decide how it is.

Posted: 2/29/12 at 12:48pmWhy can't we wait until the show premiers to see how well it's going to do instead of making these preprandial predictions that just come across as negative? Nobody has heard all the music in its entirety or seen it yet so what's the point? Also, I happened to think Sister Act was fantastic.

Posted: 2/29/12 at 1:34pmAnd the "reviews" in LA have no particular relevance since the following aspects of the production have changed: principal parts, major characters, songs, certain casting choices, framing devices, director, choreographer, writer, designer. But don't let that stop you from damning a show that went into rehearsals two weeks ago...

Posted: 2/29/12 at 10:14pmI admit, that while I know it's been in development for ages (as most musicals now seem to be), I expected, after such a mixed reaction in LA, to see one more regional production before a Broadway one--maybe I was thinking about the several Sister Act productions before it opened in London, and then more changes for New York, but... Still, I'm always willing to give Alan Menken the bvenefit of doubt, even if lately he seems to slightly disappoint me almost as often as not.

Posted: 2/29/12 at 10:32pmYeah, though I didn't realize I admit that the Atlanta production was almost a transfer from California--weren't there at least some major casting changes between the two?

Sister Act did not premiere in La Jolla...
i think the big casting change was when it premiered in Pasadena and then at the Alliance it starred Dawnn Lewis

Posted: 2/29/12 at 11:28pmI meant Pasadena. I have NO idea why I wrote La Jolla. Random.

Posted: 2/29/12 at 11:31pmI;m just hoping Leap of Faith runs through July, as that's the only time I can make it to NY, and my sister will be very upset if she is unable to see Raul in a show on Broadway. Hopefully it will get decent enough reviews to run through the summer.

Posted: 2/29/12 at 11:50pmA big difference between the two is most people had seen the Sister Act film and had certain expectations about how the musical should play. It's my impression that Leap of Faith is hardly well known and will essentially play as a new "original" musical to many theatergoers.

It has to be better than Sister Act.
What isn't better than Sister Act.

People seem to forget that Sister Act was generally well received. The only three major publications that didn't review it kindly were the Times, Variety, and the Wall Street Journal. The Post, NY Daily News, the AP, NY1, Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today all loved it. So to answer you question:
What isn't better than Sister Act.
More things than you think? Sister Act was actually quite good, in my opinion.

Posted: 3/1/12 at 12:24amI always forget that Leap of Faith (the movie) was a bit of a box office flop and maybe not too well remembered--as a teenager I swear it was on TV once a week. But certainly Sister Act was (by far) the bigger hit.

ALOT of religious topics will be playing this season!
Sister Act, Leap of Faith, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell...
And of course, jews are represented by everything currently playing on broadway...

The worst musicals I have ever had to sit through with almost no redeeming values whatsoever.:
This is my opinion and my opinion only.
Home Sweet Homer
Doctor Jazz
Marlowe
Shogun the Musical
Wild and Wonderful
Dance a Little Closer
Bring Back Birdie
Merlin
and
Sister Act
Again my opinion only! I hate when they take a great movie and make it a mediocre musical.
I'd rather they take a mediocre movie and make it into a great musical!!!!

Posted: 3/1/12 at 4:21pmOnce again goldenboy attempts to poach a thread in order to continue to put forth his hatred of Sister Act. Please get over it. It's only a show. If it offends you, don't go.

Posted: 3/1/12 at 5:48pmIt doesn't matter if or when Leap of Faith opens. We will never know the quality of the show until After Eight tells us and then we'll have an approved list of adjectives.
