No, I wasn't referring purely to the gender swap, I was referring to the actual differences in characterization between Vereen and Miller.

And, as I've said, I HATED Pippin as a show. Passionately. But what Patina is doing deserves recognition.

Many of the voters will remember Vreen's performance fondly and the comparison may not help Patina. Laura is playing a very different character than that for which she was nominated last season and that comparison may help her.

To me, both Patina and Laura did a good job embodying the roles they were asked to play on stage. Laura's show is not nearly as morally/sexually/tonally ambiguous as Patina's, and should not be to her detriment that her performance isn't either. She is embodying a pureness, befitting the fairytale source, and also happens to have the kind of crystal clear voice that best exemplifies that.

Patina is embodying a more enigmatic character, perhaps a more demanding physical role but one absent the sort of purity that CINDERELLA requires. They are quite apples and oranges, a good reminder that Awards voting is always folly, but there we have it. Now let's all decide if I'm right or wrong.

Also, as an aside, watching broadway guy try in vain to defend his characterization of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA as a "Disney princess" - a contention that couldn't literally be more wrong - is hilarious. Good sport.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Patina is also playing a very different character from the one for which she was previously nominated...I'm not sure how that has much to do with anything.

Because she is. Not technically of course but her character is seriously all fluff. She goes to the ball, looses the shoe and then the prince finds her and she lives happily ever after. SO STRESSFUL...

I mean, you're allowed to disagree with my assessment of the point of Best Actress award and with my interpretation of Patina and Laura's work, both of which I've actually seen unlike some on this thread.

But how different an actresses' characters are from season to season has absolutely no bearing on anything. The award is for the performance being given this season. Or at least it should be.

Not technically of course

But technical things like "facts" and "who people are" (not to mention spelling and grammar) don't matter much.

Call her (like I did above) a fairytale princess and you're technically correct. Call her a Disney princess and you're wrong. Defend that when called out on it and you're proudly ignorant or disrespectful (to both Disney and R&H, whichever most upsets you to learn.)

Words, y'know, mean things.

I said she is technically not a Disney princess so NO I'm not wrong cause i never said she was literally a Disney princess.

" Defend that when called out on it and you're proudly ignorant or disrespectful (to both Disney and R&H, whichever most upsets you to learn.)"

She is a fairytale princess and her character journey is bland and boring. She doesn't really go through any major crisis. Her character is fluff. She is the typical Disney princess role.

"Honestly, Laura Osnes is overdue anyway."

Words mean things. Overdue? She's been in the industry a few years, and she's never played anything but leading parts. She's had a great amount of luck and success in a short period of time.

Overdue is Patti Lupone finally getting another Tony. Laura's young and her career is just beginning, she's owed nothing.

""She is a fairytale princess and her character journey is bland and boring. She doesn't really go through any major crisis. Her character is fluff. She is the typical Disney princess role.""

boring and stress free?

1)she is constantly verbally and pprobably physically abused by her stepmother and sister...
2)she is treated like a slave by her family
3)when she does find the man of her dreams, the only way she can get to him is to compete with 100s of others at a ball
4)once she does win him over, she risks beheading and has the cajones to risk it all by telling him flat out that he is a tyrant and must change his ways.

Kelly: Well she sounds more deserving of the award than Patina for playing a role that was made famously by the great Ben Vereen, besides hasn't her leading performances in Bonnie and Clyde and Pipe Dream already enough to prove that she's a versatile leading lady, more so than Patina?

Apparently you can't grasp what I'm saying so I am going to go REALLY slow for you..

Cinderella is a fairytale story. I am NOT..i repeat...NOT.. saying Laura is technically playing a Disney princess because this is the Hammerstein version and not the Disney version. I AM SAYING, Laura is playing the type of role that is similar to a standard Disney princess character like Belle or Ariel. Im not using that fact against Laura, i am just stating it because it is true.

You seem to be so against the idea of people seeing this character as a Disney character even though Disney did do this film many years ago and the character journey is almost the same in each version. What exactly is so different between the disney cinderella and this cinderella? I am dying to hear this.....

Good grief. I know exactly what you're trying to say. I don't even disagree with you that she's a fairytale princess. I've said so now twice (so much for reading comprehension.)

It's that the words you use to imply what you're attempting to say, specifically "Disney" (which is now a name brand and production Studio that has ownership rights over its own very well-known version of the story and once upon a time also referred to a specific individual who had nothing to do with the current CINDERELLA we're discussing), are poorly-chosen and incorrect.

And it's not just me who cares about things like this. Or the lawyers of the aggrieved parties, either. The production has gone to great pains to insist on being properly billed RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA for precisely this reason. Calling any aspect of this production "Disney" is mistaken.

And, of course, I'm aware "Disney princess" is a figure of speech. You know who else is aware? Disney. For the last decade or so they've been very actively trying to wrest back the name brand they rightfully oversee from the generic public misconceptions of non-Disney princesses. So, for both R&H's and Disney's sake, try not to impudently insist that your "opinion" (which isn't an opinion and is factually incorrect) is worth anything.

Remember, when people get flummoxed by someone's behavior on here, it's because we can only go by how we present ourselves. Do show some respect to the artists, if you care.

It's amazing what wanton disrespect does for one's capacity for selective hearing.

Anyways, Lead Actress will be an interesting race. There's three very deserving candidates.

Can i just add that yes Bonnie Parker was Laura Osnes last role and yes Cinderella should be a complete departure from that...

...yet somehow LO managed to play them the exact same way.

She is a gorgeous girl and a fantastic singer but there is nothing in her acting that make her interesting to me. Miller on the other hand, had me glued to my seat the entire time by her performance and i missed her when she left the stage. During Cinderella, i was happy when we got more Fontana or Clark because they made interesting choices in roles we know so well. LO played Cinderella, nothing new, nothing interesting. MIller is also a gorgeous woman and a fantastic singer but she is also incredibly interesting to watch because of her acting ability and the choices she makes as the leading character.
