I absolutely adore that song. The harmonies are so gorgeous. One of my favorites in that show. It's so sad, but so good. Celia and Lisa are amazing.
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife

The best song in the show. Actually, the only great one. Everything else was just good.

I think that that is a great song.
"Nothing's lost forever. In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we've left behind, and dreaming ahead."

It's not just you. I was not a fan of this song until I heard it on the OBCR. It's got the most beautiful harmonies I've heard in a long time. Celia, Derrick, and Lisa shine in this piece.

I love the whole show, bu tthis song really stands out from the rest musically. I actually love the lyrics to the whole show.
"We don't value the lily less for not being made of flint and built to last. Life's bounty is in it's flow, later is too late. Where is the song when it's been sung, the dance when it's been danced? It's only we humans who want to own the future too."

After I took my kids to see it they went around for a whole day saying "mama mama mama" - in fact, for our unit awards show when they did a parody of Spelling Bee (don't worry all of you with legal rights - it was just an in class type of thing - no money made on it) that was the first thing they made sure they included was a reference to that song!
Still, as much as I do love that song and that show, I actually think there are two prettier songs on Broadway from the past season: "Nothing Is Too Wonderful To Be True" and "Say it Somehow"

I love the show and I love the song but I will admit that there are times when I feel that, thematically, the song almost belongs to a different show and does not fit with the rest of the music in this production. That does not stop me from enjoying it whenever I hear it however.
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"

When I saw the show last May, I remember being surprised and moved by the song. It definetly stands alone in the show.

It's very pretty and moving. The three performers really do shine on it.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

You are not alone. It is vocally stunning . I find the song, and exquisite blending of voices mesmerizing, thrilling and heartbreaking. Regardless of how many times I hear The I Love You Song , I am left in appreciative awe.
There was another gorgeous ballad that was in the summer production at Barrington Stage Company. It was sung by Lisa Howard as only Lisa could sing it. It was called I Don't Remember Anything At All. The creative team determined that although beautiful, it did not advance the plot. My Favorite Moment of the Bee replaced it when Spelling Bee went to Second Stage. I always missed that song because it brought the house down and was poignant and gorgeous. I was hopiong it would be one of the cuts on the CD.
I think that all of you who appreciate The I Love You Song would have loved this ballad as well...
We may have to wait for Lisa Howard to record her own CD

Agreed, it's brilliant. When I first heard it on the cast recording I thought it was great, but I wasn't especially blown away by it. When I saw it live, though, it completely stunned me, and is by far the most powerful moment in the show. After seeing the show I love and respect it much much more.

I think that this song is absolutely gorgeous, not to mention it's a completely different type of love song.

I completely agree. It's not only a beautiful song, vocally, but it beautifully portrays the heart and passion of a little girl who just wants to be loved. Something that is found in a lot of kids and hasn't been expressed as well, on stage, before. I often find that the most poignent and well expressed feelings come from children who do not have any reason to hold back in expressing what they know and feel and desire.
That's why I love working with kids and hope to, one day, bring my production on the thoughts of children to the stage.
