I was not sure if they would give it this year.
Also, wouldn't Patti LuPone be considered a replacement for Bernadette?

I believe the Tony was history after the Jonathan Pryce-Harvey Fierstein incident two or three years ago. There hasn't been much mention of its revival since.
And speaking of revivals, Patti is not a replacement for Bernadette, as this was not Bernie's show. It's a new revival unassociated with her, just as Patti was not a replacement for Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd.
And Sueleen, I feel like this is half a joke, and half not. Quite frankly I'm stumped. Here's an answer for those who may be completely under the impression that Clay deserves a Tony.

1. i'm pretty sure it's history
2. do you honestly think he would have a shot if it wasn't?
3. what was this incident?
3. Pryce deserved it, but they canned it because the only eligible actors that season were him and Fierstein (in Fiddler).

Wasn't the nominee for Best Replacement required to play the role for at least 6 months? That would automatically eliminate Clay even if the award was still given.

How would Patti Lupone be considered a replacment for Bernadette?
It was a joke.
the density shown by the the posters in this thread would rival a black hole

Coming from a fan of N2N, that means a lot.
The category was a good idea, until they started with all sorts of misconceived rules to be eligible. Pryce gave them hell for it afterwards.

Part of the problem was enough voters didn't go back to see it.
And, the idea for it came after Reba's divine turn in "Annie Get Your Gun"
Vballer, I never joke about Clay.
Never.
And you are right, no one could EVER replace Bernie.
It just seems that since it was just last month (
) that Bernie did her version, it just seems more like a replacement, or SHOULD to prevent unnecessary revivals happening too soon after the other production closes.
Oh, and I NEVER joke about Clay.

"It was a joke."
But of course. God forbid the award would be given on merit.
The Tony's awards are given on merit. If Jonathan Pryce didn't deserve it, neither does Clay.
Will Ashley Simpson be in Chicago by nomination time?

Who says Jonathan did not deserve it? The fact that he did not get enough votes just proves my point.
Why should they have to give it every year?
Why not just award it in a case where a person steps into a role that boosts the box office beyond belief and keeps the dud of a show open a bit longer, brings people to Broadway who would never come unless their obsession was playing a role in a show they have never heard of, spins bad press about how degrading it is to do a Broadway show into good press and promotes the idea that straight guys actually DO appear in Broadway musicals? I would say that person deserves SOME kind of award. Don't you?

Why not just give it for acting? Wasn't that the point in the first place?
If they still had it I think Fantasia should have got it last year she really deserved it...what a performance...

They actually cancelled the category after the Harvey/Pryce debacle.
Obviously they'll make an exception for him!
I had high hopes for K-Fed.

The Tony Awards are not going to throw off 50+ years of tradition just to accommodate Clay fans.

Lance Bass could have clinched it with his poignant turn as Corny Collins, methinks.

What 50 years? That award was like 3 years old when it was canceled. And what do you suggest the acting awards should be given for, if not for the actual acting?
