I was watching Patti LuPone's webcast episode about her Ham4Ham appearance, and she called LMM Lin- MAN-YOU-EL. Also, on the Tony broadcast when he won for In the Heights, Whoopi Goldberg said MAN-YOU-EL.
Just curious--does he go by both, or did the pronunciation change in recent years? MAN-WELL does roll off the tongue better.
TIA!

Life changing thread right here, and totally necessary.
"Man-WELL" is how it should be pronounced in Spanish. "Man-You-ELL" is an Americanized pronounciation.

Lin Man-well is correct. He has said that Man-you-ell is incorrect.
I think the real question here is. Can Patti lupone get a way with anything? Yes.
technically the correct Spanish pronunciation is Leen Mahn-well Mee-rahn-dah. But I'm sure he goes by Lin Man-well.

The real question here is...homophones?
Thanks backwoodsbarbie. I guess I new that I had to here that.
Jesus. I'm sick of hearing his name on the best of days but now I'm being taught how to be sick of his properly pronounced name.

If his name was Lin-Manuel Benanti, the odds are that nobody would ever pronounce his name correctly.

or Lin-Manuel Benanti Ralph Fiennes Ashmanskas

It's spelled "Lin-Manuel" but pronounced "GOD."
The only correct way to say it is with respect, admiration, gratitude and LOVE.

Is there more than one way to say "Benanti"?

several people give it the Italian pronunciation with an "ah" in the middle (I believe Andrew Rannells said it this way when they announced Tony nominations)

Or you could just stop opening threads that blatantly tell you it's about him or his wonderful show.

And miss all you bitter queens show off their razor sharp wit? No, thank you.
Seriously though. If i was to ignore threads that are about Lin-Man-YOU-el/MAN-you-el/Man-you-EL then it seriously limits my options on this board.
you obviously didn't read very closely since its Man-WELL.
also dramamama isn't a bitter queen, she's a mother.

Brace yourself. This is just the beginning. Sondheim's name has been trumpeted day in day out for over 40 years now, with no surcease in sight. Now we have a new king of the hill, Mr. Miranda. With the gargantuan expansion of mega-media hype capacity, you can just imagine how it will serve him in the upcoming decades.
The solution? Put on your Sunday clothes, and then your CDs of Can-Can, Tovarich, Ben Franklin in Paris,, etc., and try to forget the whole last half century ever happened!
