Hello.
After my last thread about the Brazilian Peter Pan, I did some more digging and they're also having a totally reimagined version of The Little Mermaid (their previous Disneys musicals - The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast were replica productions). There are some videos out already. What do you guys think? Is this The Little Mermaid production Broadway deserved instead of the wheelies?

I don't know what happened! They were there and then when I came back, they weren't. They even left the space when they disappeared. Anyway, I put them on my initial post again. Can you check if they're appearing now?

WTF? That second video, though. Why the 70's Martha Graham dancers? Why? What's up with the hilariously distracting 70's handle-bar mustache fella? Wasn't he one of Mitzi Gaynor's dancers around 1976? Who the p*uck thought him lifting her would create a swimming effect? It looked like she was disable and he was assisting her moving around the stage.
Ambitious production (kudos Brazil), but badly executed. The lighting is great; the costumes were well-intended but lacked any effects (Ursula's tentacles should move on their own, etc.). Also, any actress playing Ariel needs to be a great singer, first-and-foremost. All Disney princesses require this.

So those guys play the role of water? It looks forced and the lifting is awkward and pointless.
My biggest annoyance is that the scenes lack any form of sincerity. It looks like Pantomime. Especially the Ursula scene.

THIS IS BAD. but nice lighting! but the "water" people is an atrocious idea. she's singing the big number being carried across the stage by a dude??? distracting.
also why do all the fish look like birds?
I like the jellyfish though! too bad its not in scale for the rest of the fish around it.

I don't think Broadway deserves THE LITTLE MERMAID. With a weak, undramatic book, flat and uninteresting characters, and new songs and scenes that only add to the show's length, it is the weakest of the Disney musicals, regardless of the production values and/or innovative direction.
Broadway already has THE LITTLE MERMAID it deserves, it's called ONCE ON THIS ISLAND and it is close to perfection.
