Is this too risky?

I fly into JFK in a few weeks and land at 10:00am (unless there are delays). I'm meeting someone there who lands at 10:27am, so we will probably not leave the airport until 11am. I really want to try and catch the DEH matinee at 2pm that day but I'm wondering if this is too risky. I'm afraid that one of our flights could be delayed, but its on Delta and I've only ever had good experiences with them. I wish that telecharge offered ticket insurance

My rule of thumb when it comes to plane travel: if you're genuinely wondering if planning something after deboarding is too risky, don't do it. How frustrated are you going to be when you land at 12:30 instead?

(Also, my own two cents: DEH isn't worth taking the risk.)

If you and/or your friend's flights were not delayed, you could easily make it. However, it all also depends where you are staying and how long it would take you to dump your luggage. The walking to the AirTran, waiting for the trains/subway, takes around 60 to 80 minutes. It has always been pretty routine for me although once going to the airport I left at 4am and because the subway had issues added an extra hour for me. The only risky part I see is if your flights arrive on time.

Also, if either of you check bags, you can add an extra 30 minutes

MY ADVICE: If you're not international, you can make it with checked bags. If you are, then you can't. I'd take the risk, and don't wait for the friend if it gets too late. They can always call a taxi.

My sister and I fly in from Texas each year on a Wednesday and book the earliest flight that has us arrive around 10:30 and we always schedule a matinee and have never been late and we always have checked baggage. We do however stay at the Hotel Edison in the Theater District on 47th and Broadway where we can check our bags in five minutes and be out the door to any theater easlily.I say go for it.And I think DEH is a must see show. I've seen in three times!!

Yes it is too risky. I tried similar and got delayed and ended up selling Sweeney Todd tickets on here cheap. You are also increasing the risk with two flights.

Thank you all for the advice! We are staying in the theatre district and will be taking a taxi from JFK. Also, we're not checking any bags and we're coming from Florida/Atlanta, so not international.

I’d reccomned seeing a show that’s not hard to get tickets to and could be easily bought and hour or so before, just to be safe. Dear Evan Hansen is great and you should secure tickets for another night, but if that’s the only time you can go, you should be perfectly fine as long as there are no delays.

I decided to purchase the ticket and I'm super excited! I saw DEH on Ben's second to last night and I fell in love with the show. So excited to see it again. Since it's a Wednesday matinee, who will be out of the show? I know MLB with be playing Evan but is there anyone else that doesn't perform during the matinees?

I doubt it would be risky. Morning flights are less likely to be delayed, unless yuppie planes jus suffering mechanical issues or there is an issue with the weather.

Only you can assess the risk you are comfortable with. If it would kill you to lose the money, don’t do it. Otherwise, do it!

I regularly land at JFK, with checked luggage, between 3:30-4:00 pm and make 7:00 curtains (obviously easier when curtain is at 8:00 pm). So far (knock wood) I have never missed, but I am always prepared that my luck may run out. I take a cab except one time I rented a car, drove into the city, parked, checked into my hotel and still made it (needed car to drive out of the City for work the next day). I have always had time to check in, drop luggage, etc. I’m willing to risk losing the money because my visits are limited and I always want to cram the extra show in my first night.

Fosse 76 is also correct that morning flights on are on time more often than not and Delta has good on time performance (except the time I sat on the plane for two hours at JFK on my way home because they couldn’t get fuel in the tank).

You can look to see the on time performance for your flights. On the Delta app under “Book a flight”, put in your travel dates to pull up your flight. In the white square showing your flight info, choose “View Details”. Scroll down and it shows the percentage of flights that are on time and how many are more than 30 mins late. Info is probably also on website. Good luck!!

I checked the percentage of flights that are on time for my flight and it's 100%, so that's a little bit reassuring :). Wanted to bump this post to ask this question again: does anyone know who's out for the Wed matinees? I know Taylor is but I'm curious about everyone else. Thanks

Well, MLB is out of Wednesday Matinees, and I'm not sure if you keep up with cast changes, but Mike Faist left last Sunday, and now Alex Boniello is Connor Murphy. If anybody else is out, the understudies are AMAZING, so you'll definitely enjoy them. Have fun!

I don’t know if anyone cares, but I thought I’d update. This was actually yesterday and I made it to my hotel in Times Square with about 2.5 hours until the show (no flight delays). I had plenty of time to check in, eat lunch, and still be at the show 40 minutes before it started. I’m so glad I took the risk because I was front row and it was amazing!

I always buy ticket insurance to shows that I book for the day I arrive in NY.
