Forgive me if that has been posted already. The article was just posted today and I didn't see any discussion about it so...
Excerpt:
Meanwhile, Shaiman is busy re-writing the score of Hairspray for its upcoming film version (snip)
"We've written a new ballad for Tracy to show off her voice and a new number for Link where 'It Takes Two' was. We were really hoping to change Link's name to Oscar, so we could write something called 'I Want Oscar," he jokes, referring to his desire to add an Academy Award to his mantle. We're even written a new song for Velma. I know a lot of people didn't love 'Miss Baltimore Crabs,' but if they heard me do the uncut version, they'd change their mind.
Aww I always liked It Takes Two. :-P

They probably re-wrote it so that Zac kid could actually sing it...

Hah! I love Marc. I swear, if there was any composer on Broadway who could suddenly turn actor and get rave reviews, it'd be The Shai-Man.

Exactly. Zack probably couldn't sing it worth sh*t. Ugh, I really just don't like him and his stupid smile.
Wow, sorry, that was really rude, but oh well. I can't wait to hear the new songs. Esp the new "belty" Tracy song.

But that's one of the songs I don't skip on that cd!
I don't know; maybe the movie will be good. But the cast really hasn't got me very excited, and neither does the pre-requisite re-writing-the-show-cause-it's-a-movie-now routine.
No! Don't get rid of It Takes Two! Please Please Please don't. I loved that number.
And changing Link's name to Oscar, that's just unatural. Everyone will be saying different names when your talking about it and it'll just get confusing. I can see it now.
"Oscars soooo dreamy"
"You mean Link?"
"eeewaa Link. What kind of a name is that?? You know nothing at Hairspray."
Maybe the new song can explain how on earth Link is going to be a teen heartthrob in this movie?
aww that's a bummer I like It Takes Two

The ONLY reason I'm not that excited about this is because Harvey Fierstein isn't in it!!!!!!! And they could've gotten someone waaaayy better than John Travolta!?!?
They aren't changing his name to Oscar. That was a joke

Ha, Thank you Craig. And I agree, why not get Harvey in the movie? He made the role what it is?
As much as I like It Takes Two, it doesnt really show who Link is or advance the story. May be the new song will.

But it wasn't meant to. It's not a song that's in the "show" its part of the Corney Collins show. It's just Link performing and all the girls swooning over him. It wasn't meant to progress the plot any, it was more used to introduce his character.
Whose to say this new song wont, may be it can do both.
but I do have to add thast a real shame though. If I find out anymore info on this - i'll let ya'll know.
Hi, it's me, Hairspray songwriter Marc Shaiman, here to give you just the facts:
"It Takes Two" is still in the script right now, but the new song is (sorta) in the slot of ITT.
Meanwhile, I hate to spoil the cattiness, for I love to be catty, but I went to the first rehearsal yesterday with "the kids" and Zac is a) adorable (and if I was an 17 year ld girl, I would also have a huge crush on him) b) as sweet as could be, and c) sings GREAT. I have NO idea why they needed to augment his voice in "High School Musical" (for I have not seen it or heard the CD) but he not only has a nice sounding voice, he has a great feel for the songs, and watching him (and all the four young leads) rehearsing was asolutely thrilling.
He is gonna be wonderful as "Link". We, the writers, couldn't be happier.
Marc
And my anticipation grows less for this movie...
I love you marc!
They will probably be more cuts to come in the future unfortunately
its true.
Hopefully with the DVD - we will be able to see it all in some form.
Ya know, the "dvd" sure has changed the movie making process.
You should be able to buy a different DVD edition
I would buy The Producers if King of Broadway were put back in
KOB is on the dvd just not in the actual movie. But you mean like re-cut in to the film?
Marc Shaiman, not only are you talented and hilarious, you always know the right moment to come along and do a bit of "wind out of sails" stealing. Should you ever be in the HUGELY unlikely situation where you want to come to southwest England and have someone have your babies, please get in touch. For you, I'd be more than happy to oblige.
Dammit. One of my favorite songs in the show, and it might be cut. Cut "Baltimore Crabs", cut "Cooties". But please do not cut this.
