I believe that the JR version is essentially the same as the TYA version, in which case I absolutely agree with you. The show in its two act form just feels bloated and overlong. The Broadway production, and subsequent tours, even with the revisions, felt overproduced and unfocused. The TYA script, and especially the production done by Theatreworks at the Lortel, directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, definitely streamlined the show for the better (and that production is just absolutely charming in its simplicity).
