JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE reviews

Critic's Pick from Helen Shaw of the NYT

Vulture is positive: "Abigail Onwunali is particularly powerful in a role that Wilson saves till the eleventh hour, and Boone goes to places at once frightening and devastating."

3/5 from The Guardian - "Allen’s staging doesn’t match the fine work she’s drawn from her actors, who are mostly confined to the kitchen table far stage left. This leaves the rest of the house – a cozy living room and a stairway that seems to climb toward heaven – frustratingly unexplored."

New York Stage Review: Melissa Rose Bernardo is mixed and Frank Scheck is positive

The Wrap is positive: "One of the Season's Best"

Theatrely is mixed-negative: "Softness slides into sleepiness in this unremarkable revival,""

Deadline is positive: "lovingly and astutely directed by Debbie Allen with a no-weak-link cast"

I just want to point out once again that The Lost Boys is the only new musical this season without at least one previous major production, so it's entirely unremarkable that it set aside a longer period to work out the kinks. Furthermore, by a number of accounts, the creative team used this time very fruitfully to streamline the show.

You really don't have to.   It's not that it's "unremarkable" - It's very clear why they did it.    But it's also not normal so its noted.  The set cannot function other houses (any tour will have to be re-htought)..  Now that the Palace has been raised many shows will use elevators (just like Tammy Faye did as well). The lost Boys is just the first to have the option (Tammy Faye was mostly already built from london)..   It's a Radio City Musical Hall elevator space now.  So it's not that it's not obvious WHY its longer - but, of the shows this season, they still had the longest period - even after many readings and workshops.  And are opening last.  Just noted why the are opening last and have been in rehearsals for months an months and months.

At this point, you're just doing this to be irksome. Stop.

78 on Broadway Scorecard, recommended.

“Wilson's masterwork receives mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the stellar ensemble cast, particularly Ruben Santiago-Hudson, though some find Debbie Allen's direction uneven in capturing the play's mystical qualities.”
