Here is an article from one of your favorite Broadway columnists... someone named Reidel? from RC in Austin, Texas
Jake Gyllenhaal In Play?

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Hasn't this already been done a million times over?
Sounds awful to me.

Which brings the question...are Broadway fans really all that interested in political shows anyway?

DON'T DO IT JAKE! WE LOVE YA THE WAY YOU ARE!!!

I love him. I would watch him anything---except something political. Figures...huh?

This sounds great. I lived in DC for a while, so when I heard the title "Faragut North" I knew exactly where they were talking about.

Hopefully Gylenhall won't get chewed out (ala Julia Roberts), but the prospect of a play based on Howard Dean's political campaign sounds too intriguing not to see.

Who isn't interested in politics? Frost/Nixon's doing good business so far. And Coast of Utopia and Radio Golf were both atleast on some level about politics.

Howard Dean? I'd see it if only for Gyllenhaal's imitation of Howards cattle call during the last election

Oh Ben, we get it...you live in DC and love politics - GO FIGURE!! HAHA!

The point I was thinking when I typed that was: If you asked 100 people on the streets in line for Broadway show tickets, what percentage of them would even know who Howard Dean was?? I'm guessing generously at maybe 20%.

The producers would HAVE to get some star power in there to even get most people to think about going.

That's what I meant. Different strokes, eh?

i love politics but i think if audiences didn't go for THE VERTICAL HOUR, they certainly aren't going to go for this. ¤shrug¤ maybe i'll be wrong

20%?

Dean was pretty big news for a while. You might get 20% if you asked 12 year olds in line for Legally Blonde or Mary Poppins, but if you asked older people in line for straight plays you'd definately get alteast 80-90%.

Besides, I don't think Faragut North has to smash box-office records to make it's mark.

Who cares about Howard Dean? I can't imagine there's anything there that is compelling.

Lapine directing Gyllenhal? Sounds good to me. And Lapine also has a pretty good track record for choosing material. I can't believe all the antipathy towards the subject matter.

But then I could never understand why everyone was so excited about a musical based on a painting. A good show can come from anywhere.

Heh, Farragut North. I get off there to go to Georgetown.

Jake already did This Is Our Youth on the West End; he's not exactly in the same position as Julia Roberts.

Yeah I was going to say something to the effect that I think Jake is more talented and versatile than our dear Julia, who's acting seems to only work on screen. I'll be there to see Jake, because he's uh . . . talented, yes talented.

I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat. He's one of my favorite actors. He's young, but he's got talent.

Dancing Thru Life: JIMMY Dean is the sausage guy. Howard Dean is the uber liberal. from RC in Austin, Texas

I.Would.S**t.Myself!

I think he's a brilliant actor and am sure he would be amazing onstage (as i heard he was in London's This is Our Youth) and if that cast stays the same it would be even more amazing.
although Allison Pill is doing that other play.

RIP Natasha Richardson. ~You were a light on this earth ~

There's a big difference between Jake and Julia on the stage. Julia had never done theater at all before, where as Jake had been on the stage in the West End in 2002 and won an Evening Standard Award for his performance and received great reviews. Plus he's much younger than Julia and hasn't gone his whole career without doing theatre. So it's awesome that he's ready to do a play on Broadway. re: Jake Gyllenhaal Headed For The Great White Way?

oh dear. Well he proved that he could out-sing both the Jennifers Holiday and Hudson on SNL, so anything's possible in his future.

No, that's just their perpetuation of what's currently little more than rumor. Official confirmation would be a press release.

I'd see it. I'm not into politics, but Jake's a great actor. I'd love to see him on stage.
