Why is Jake Gyllenhaal playing the boyfriend in the movie Proof? He's not supposed to be younger than her. I think that's a stupid change to make. You know, movie casters, he's not the only "sensitive young man" around.
Hope Davis will be the sister, although she could probably play the lead too. When I saw the play, I thought the lead role just screamed Winona Ryder. (although I'm sure Gwyneth will do/has done fine) Woulda been a good way for Winona to restore her cred.

Jake is around twenty one or so, he's an amazing actor, hence the photo on my post, lol.
Robactorguy, I love you forever because of that Donnie Darko picture you have as your image.

I know he's around 21 (22, actually).
Gwyneth is about to turn 31.
That's why he's too young for the role.
Just because someone's a good actor, even a great actor, they're not right for every possible part. Too many people on this message board champion their favorite performer for every freakin' role. It doesn't work that way, kids. We probably all agree that Barbra Streisand is talented. Should she play, say, Laurey in Oklahoma? (even when she was younger)
pardon the rant...

He's not bothering me nearly as much as the Gwynnie choice. I can't get started on why I despise that woman, I'll be here all night.

I saw Gwyneth perform in the role at the Donmar Warehouse in London. The audience, myself included, found her performance riveting and absorbing.
If you haven't been at the Donmar it is a small 250-seater theatre, where the ground seats are composed of about 3 rows arranged about 3/4 around the stage ( which is a lower level in the middle). With such an intimate setting, the audience could appreciate every nuance of her performance. And we were certainly treated to an excellent performance by a very fine actress that evening.

Catherine is 25 in Proof and Hal is around the same age, no? So if Gwyneth can play 6 years younger then Jake can play 3 years older, it isn't really THAT much of a stretch. Plus, he is an amazing actor so he'll be great. I saw Gwyneth at the Donmar Warehouse as Catherine and she was absolutely on fire, though of course not as good as the incomparable Mary Louise Parker.

Well, that's definitely good. Good for her. I'm glad to hear that she took the role seriously.
You don't SOUND very glad, cabarethed......
And while we're talking age for the part here, I don't recall anyone getting all bent out of shape about the fact that Jennifer Jason Leigh turned FORTY when she was playing the role on Broadway.
Regardless of actual ages, it's not a stretch to say that Jake looks much younger than Gwyneth and, since they're supposed to be similarly aged in the script, that could be a distraction in a movie. Will it be? Who knows. But it's not an unreasonable point to note beforehand.

jake usually looks younger in films because they have him playing teens. if they want him to be college age he could look older, it's no big deal, the talent is what we want, and gweneth and jake are excellent choices.

Eh, no, I am to an extent. I don't want anyone to ruin the character of Catherine, and I *am* happy to hear that she didn't just treat it as something to bide her time in England or to boost her creds.
I would have opted for Anne Heche, personally. Thought she was the most interesting of the NY Catherines, even moreso than Mary Louise Parker.
Anne Heche was very VERY good but she delivered her dialogue at such a rapid speed at times you were pushed to catch it all.

John Popa said it best re: the age difference between Paltrow and Gyllenhall (see message earlier on this thread).
Not only Jennifer Jason Leigh but Mary Louise Parker was "too old" for the role. It didn't hurt her performance; frankly they should have just altered the parts of the scripted that pegged her at 25. But Mary Louise was already 35 when she played the part, so don't just pick on Jennifer!
