Hi Everyone... OK, I've just been introduced to J&H. I have the DVD with David Hasslehoff... Now, I've heard the original recording (Linda/Robert Cuccioli) and they're quite good.
I never really like Linda Eder until my boyfriend got me hooked on her (I can say that right, this is a THEATRE community!!) Anyway, He HATES Colleen Sexton. I think she's OK, but her voice is very... um... pop sounding. Which is fine, no denying she can sing. But I think he dislikes her because she's not Linda. Having said that, does Lucy really make or break the show?? After thinking about it, I tend to agree with him. (Don't tell him I said that, I'll never live it down!) I never saw the show w/Linda, but I can imagine what a powerhouse she'd be in the part. That being said, while Luba Mason is hard to look at, she's amazing vocally, so I'd guess that she was fantastic!
I'm not going to comment on David Hasslehoff because many of my opinions were expressed in the "Worst Person Ever To Play This Part" message!
Thanks everyone!
david.

Lucy can make or break the show yes. She doesn't hae a monstrous part but ALL the best songs in the show, and ALL of them ALL are showstoppers.

Yeah, Lucy does make it or break it. I loved both Linda and Coleen in te part. They were both great in the role.
Agreed. Lucy does make the show. Frank Wildhorn wrote it for Linda Eder, who happens to be his wife.

Coleen Sexton was the highlight of the DVD... with Andrea Rivette as Emma coming in second.
I agree with broadwayguy. Although Linda Eder is amazing, and my favorite Broadway belter hands down, Coleen Sexton was the highlight for me as well. She's amazing. I don't think Lucy makes the show, although is she is amazing.

Lucy HAS to make the show. When I saw the show, I remember feeling that Lucy was the most emotionally compelling of the pricipals (Frankly, I didn't give a damn about Jekyll and that was due to the writing). To me, that also seems logical that it would be that way considering the eder's husband DID write the show, so it isn't a stretch to think he would give her the best material in the show. If you don't have a Lucy that can really sell that character to the audience and make them feel for her, the show weakens ALOT.
I agree that Lucy makes or breaks the show. Her character seems to be the best thing in that show.
Wait- I misread the post. I thought you said Linda Eder makes the show. She doesnt. But the character Lucy most definitely makes the show. Its easily the best character. For more details, read what broadwayguy wrote above.
The best recording of the show is the 2 CD concept recording with Eder, Anthony Warlow, and Carolee Carmello. This recording reflects the way the show was in its premiere at the Alley and then again with the Alley and TUTS--which are apparently the best two productions the musical has ever seen. Apparently the show has never really found its finished self.
