NYT: ‘Hadestown’ Hits Movie Theaters, and Theater to Stream in July

Does anyone understand what's going on with this? Streaming, limited days?
The movie theater nearest me is showing tickets from July 23 - July 30, 8 days. Since I'm out of town the first 6 of them, I'm really interested in the last 2. I haven't bought a ticket yet, but got as far as being asked for a credit card number.
I'd really like to see this if possible, though if it's going to stream, I'm OK waiting for that, since I did see it live with the original cast.

If you are asking based on the article title, it is saying that "Hadestown" is coming to theaters. The rest of the shows mentioned will be streaming.

Strangely enough, I’ve not yet gotten around to seeing Hadestown live. Since this capture is now in movie theaters, I caught it this afternoon. First let me say that this show is not for conservative theatregoers. Several of them may find it weird and confusing.
With that being said, I was still very much into the whole thing. The capture is excellently put together. The cast is full of such powerhouse performances. Anaïs Mitchell’s folk score is so incredibly haunting. With Rachel Chavkin at the helm, the overall stage craft is very dynamic. Quite an emotionally empowering experience.
Bill Condon has often talked about how there’s not a lot of stage musicals he personally thinks should be made into movies. A key reason for that is because the theatricality of the material can make it hard to reimagine for a more literal medium. Easy to see that being the case with this one in particular. Thankfully, we should all be grateful that this stunning live capture exists.

Just getting out of this and I am very serious when I say this just might be the best filmed version of a show that has ever been made. Not only is the filming spectacular, capturing things I’d never even noticed, but as someone who has seen this show (and this cast many many times) this is the best they’ve all ever been. I’m sort of dumbstruck with just how magnificent this entire thing was. This sets an impossibly high bar for any show that wants to do this moving forward, and I’m very glad for that.

I understood the OP to be asking if anyone knows where the Hadestown movie will move on to a streaming service after its theatrical release. But i could be wrong ...
Come to think of it, even if I am wrong that's a great question!

Jordan, since you have a vast knowledge of Broadway, what other Broadway shows filmed live do you think they did a stellar job with?

Writer-composer Anaïs Mitchell transformed a centuries-old myth into a modern masterpiece, while visionary director Rachel Chavkin stages it with remarkable vibrancy, imagination, and urgency. The production remains as fresh and powerful on film as it does on stage.
Although Amber Gray and Patrick Page were unfortunately out the night I saw the show on Broadway (their understudies were excellent), I was fortunate enough to see Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, and Tony Award winner André De Shields perform live. This film would be worth watching for De Shields alone. Preserving his performance on video ensures that audiences everywhere can witness just how extraordinary it truly was. It was unforgettable in the theater and remains every bit as mesmerizing here.
When I saw the show, Carney and Noblezada had only recently begun dating; now they're married, and that chemistry radiates through every moment of their portrayal of the doomed lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. The result is white-hot emotion paired with vocals so powerful they practically give your blood cells goosebumps.
Page and Gray are sensational both individually and together, and it was a pleasure to finally see their performances. The band is superb, and the ensemble deserves immense credit for their tireless work, fluid physicality, and exceptional vocals.
The three Fates are outstanding. Their interpretation differs from the Broadway production, and I suspect the music has been transposed to a lower key, but the change only enhances the effect. Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne, and Allie Daniel blend with such rich resonance that their harmonies seem to vibrate through you. Daniel, in particular, anchors the lower register with a wonderfully rich contralto.
This is, without question, one of the greatest musicals of the last twenty years. Only Hamilton rivals it in my estimation, and even then, some of the music in Hadestown surpasses it. Beautifully filmed and expertly preserved, this production stands as a breathtaking showcase of theater at its highest level. Until Hollywood finally gives the musical the feature-film adaptation it deserves, this is the definitive way to experience one of the crown jewels of contemporary musical theater.

Best proshot since Passing Strange, so glad kids hundreds of miles from New York or London will have access to this into the future. It's a good thing for theater. I just wish we got these more often, and that it was more possible from them to come from New York.

Concur this is one of the most well shot musical recordings we have gotten in years. It is sublime and then some. What a treat.
Did anyone else notice, anytime a character got a close-up during a larger group number, the mixing shifted so you could hear their voice come through more clearly ontop of the larger mix? As if the audience moved to sit right next to them halfway through the number.
This entire recording was just so well produced.

As someone who's been in the tank as a superfan since the NYTW run, I'm *thrilled* at these reviews - am going on Sunday evening and can't wait. Looks very well sold across the board, the Hollywood blog Deadline.com is projecting $8 - $10 million this weekend. Really impressive considering such a limited run.
Rather random thought: would there be any route for some sort of film awards season consideration for this? Or are pro-shots like this one technically ineligible for some reason?
I believe I recall that Disney's initial plan was a full-on theatrical release for the Hamilton pro shot before deciding to take it to Disney+ during the height of COVID.pandemic.

It never really occurred to me that this proshot would be a tough ticket but it is - at least tonight south of San Francisco. Hadestown is playing in smaller theaters at some multiplexes but it’s selling very well, even at the deserted mall where I usually can catch anything easily. That’s a larger theater and tonight’s 7 p.m. performance is packed except for the front rows. The Odyssey would be easier.
I’m seeing live theater on Saturday night. I guess I will have to plan to see it Sunday.
Quick question: Are there previews before the proshot or does it start right away? I have had different experiences seeing proshots in movie theaters.

In the movie theater that I saw this in, it was treated just like a movie not a "proshot". Meaning, there were ads and previews before the actual start of the movie (one preview was for the proshot of SIX, the rest were regular movie previews).
I loved this. It is an exemplary capture of the musical. I just saw this on Broadway last month on a trip to New York. I enjoyed the performance in New York very much, but found it hard to hear all the lyrics. This movie version was so clarifying, and hearing the excellent lyrics really was terrific. I actually found the intimacy achieved in the filming and editing made the story and music so much more emotional and moving for me.
Truly an excellent capture of the show!

I'm not going until tomorrow night, and I just can't wait! I've heard from many sources this is done crazy well - and I don't mind saying I was a bit gun shy after the way Merrily turned out.

Let's keep this trend going. Next up is "Six" and if they can show profit, I hope it continues with more proshots giving the rest of the world great culture, just like the NY Met has been doing for years.

It’s really well directed. There are some incredible shots they pull off and seem really focused on making the material shine as much as possible

#2 at the US box office yesterday with nearly $4m. Estimated to hit around $10m for the weekend. Impressive!
