No one else is in the same stratosphere as Hudson this year. There are other very good, outstanding supporting female performances, absolutely...
...and then there's Hudson... sitting at a level of achievement all her own. She's Haley's Comet. This comes along every 75 years, and it's not just another "good job" to be judged next to other "good jobs."
As far as fading into obscurity, she might just do that. But now is the time to recognize and celebrate her incredible, jaw-dropping work as Effie. I do (easily) predict that this is the high-point (as well as the start) of her film career. Roles just aren't written like this very often, for ANYONE, let alone for black actresses of any age or type.
This is "it." I hope she will continue to work (if she wants to) as an actress... but there is no way in hell she'll follow this with another "Effie"-sized performance. They aren't out there to play.
My hope is that she concentrates on her recording career for awhile, and if she's smart, she will study acting, and learn her craft... God knows she already has the raw talent (more so than many brilliant actors that have come before her), but she doesn't know how to do it yet on her own. She has many options and choices in front of her now, and I hope she's smart about it. But don't look for Effie 2 anytime soon. This is a "once in a lifetime" role, and a "once in a lifetime" performance... and I'm pretty sure she knows it.
But for now... this is HER YEAR. T'ain't no doubt about it.
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."
