How can someone's opinion be an uninformed comment? Just because someone doesn't like the she sings the song doesn't mean they're uninformed... the could just not like her voice... I don't know how that's possible but there you go. Songs are written for people all the time that are then re-interpreted by others in a way that may outshine the original...if we wanna go theater "Send in the Clowns" was written for the performer and yet many many others have done that song better than Glynnis Johns...(in my uninformed opinion Sarah Vaughn and Judi Dench). Pop/Rock artists write songs for themselves that are then done better by other artists (Bob Dylan's entire catalouge). Certainly nobody does it LIKE Jennifer Holliday, but you shouldn't jump down someone's throat because you think you know more about the history of the song. It's rude and unbecoming of a legend such as yourself.
That said... I thought Ms. Hudson's version of that song was quite unremarkable. No were near the upper strata reach by Ms. Holliday.
An uninformed
KC
Well at least she has the same weave that Holliday is sportin' now.
I like Jen, but she's singing with NO emotional connection to the lyric. It's all brassy belting.
With Holliday, you believed every word of her steadfastness and pain.
Ms. Hudson has a way to go yet. But first she needs to LOSE the ragmop weave. She's a gorgeous girl, but you'd never know it from that video.

Yeah shes not having a super dramatic or emotional performance of the song because shes singing in the middle of one of those radio station "Jingle Jam" type concerts where 7 or so artists go on and off the stage performing quick sets...She didn't have an entire events of the first act to build to the 'emotional explosion' that is the song. I just think this shows she has a lot of POTENTIAL... At the Hair benefit concert she took "Easy To Be Hard" - added her own stylings and riffs and turned it into a bluesy showstopper.
By the way - please let the revival happen!!
You've all got to keep in mind that on this recording she's singing the song at some fundraiser or event or something. It's not in any context, they just threw her up there (obviously with not much rehearsal) to belt high notes. Don't take any acting from this, because there really isn't any that's applicable.
KC, while your thoughts are welcomed, they are not being put in the right place. The comment was uninformed because Jennifer Hudson sang the song as it is supposed to be sung, and as it is written on the page. That is how the writers intended it to be sung. Everything in the score is written down including the riffs, the tempos, the dynamics, everything. If you do not like this version of the song, then yes, you don't like the song the way it's supposed to be sung.
The fact is, the comment WAS uninformed, because if they knew the history of the song, they would know that the way Jennifer Holliday sang the song, is the way the authors INTENDED and also the way they WROTE it. We're not talking about reinterpreting it, because that song is not up for reinterpretation.
And while you may think that Margo's comment was rude and unbecoming, you're not coming across too nicely, either.
I'm actually not a fan of Jennifer Holliday's voice either. No I'm not misinformed or anything, I'm just not a huge fan of her voice...nothing wrong with the WAY she sang it.

I can see that I wasn't very clear in my first post. Thanks to people who have clarified what I meant. Also, thank you to those who disagree with me for not resorting to calling me and idiot or a loser.
First of all, I agree that my personal opinion can't be uninformed, and I do know the history of the song. I never said it wasn't written for Jennifer Holliday, nor did I say that her performance of that song isn't the definitive version. I know that the song was written for her, much like someone mentioned above with 'Send in the Clowns' and Glynis Johns. So I wasn't uninformed in this regard, because I never made a claim contrary to the facts.
I also wasn't clear enough with my opinion. I don't DISLIKE Jennifer Holliday's voice. I don't LOVE it, but I'm far from disliking it. And like I said before, I would never dream of denying that she has talent and uses her voice well. I like her recording of the song just fine. What I said is that I don't prefer her voice. What I mean by that is that I don't feel like she's the only person who can sing the song and that no one else could ever do it justice. I'll try and relate this to another example. 'Don't Rain On My Parade', although not expressly written FOR Barbra Streisand the way this song was for Holliday, is a Barbra Streisand song. She "owns" it (in my opinion, Jule Styne and Bob Merrill own in before anyone, but that's another topic). Linda Eder routinely performs this song as well, and in my personal opinion I like her version better. But it is still Barbra Streisand's song. No matter how good Linda's version was, it is and will always be a Streisand song.
That's what I'm saying with this song. I understand that it will always be Jennifer Holliday's song, but what I'm saying is that I don't think she's irreplacable. She's unforgettable, of course, in the sense that no one will be able to make people forget Jennifer Holliday in that role, but I don't think that should stop people from trying. I get the sense from some people that it almost doesn't matter who plays Effie in the movie because it's pointless trying to live up to Holliday. Well, it DOES matter.
I'm getting the feeling that people are going to see me as someone who's trying to start a controversy, and I'm really, really not, but I wanted to defend my opinion (sort of a strange notion!).
Also, where did this stuff about riffs come in? I didn't make any mention about Holliday doing anything that wasn't in the score. I really can't see where people got that from what I wrote.
Anyway, thanks for not flaming me, and thanks to those who defended my opinion, however poorly stated it was.
That was awesome. Love her voice..and she's definitely an awesome performer. Can't wait to see her in something on Broadway.
OH MY FREAKIN' BROADWAY GOD!!! That was A-M-A-ZING!!!!! Everytime I hear her sing someting I love her more and more. She should def. play Effie at one point in her life (maybe the movie?). You go girl!!!

It doesn't work! HELP!
do you have the latest Windows Media Player?
Caleb, I think we all got confused by you saying her "rendition" because it's really not her rendition, but it's the way the writers wanted it to be sung. She was very impactful on the creation of the song, and much of what she did affected the, now written, melody. And then somehow the post got to talking about Jennifer Hudson, when we were actually talking about Jennifer Holliday. All those Jennifer's get confusing. Don't take it too hard. No one was attacking you on purpose. Some of us just get really into it with Dreamgirls. It's close to my heart.
Wow! Vocally, she was amazing. The only thing that bothered me was her movements.
