Jeremy Jordan in "Newsies"

Posted: 7/22/12 at 6:21pmHe didn't win the Tony though did he, so lets not stick the 'Olivo' label on the guy just yet. I don't envy him juggling Newsies, Smash and wedding. There are actors who would have wriggled out of a show, even in the lead, at the first whiff of a role in a tv show.

Posted: 7/22/12 at 6:58pmI think it means that if he had won the Tony, he would have more negotiating power to get what he wants, and that would be an alternate.

Posted: 7/22/12 at 7:51pmI find it amazing that Jeremy Jordan has been given the Karen Olivo label when at the moment he's missed exactly one performance.

Also realize that till July Newsies was doing 3 double days a week, though it was dark on Tuesday and Thursday. Now the show does the usual Wednsday and Saturday with a later matinee on Saturday, so the change in scheduale, despite the triple double day making more sense during the summer, might have been made to give Jordan as well as the rest of the cast more recouperation time between show.
**even though the theater was dark on Tuesdays the entire cast had dance rehersal for 8 hour, I learmed this when i tried toake plan with my friends on a Tuesday, and he looked at me and said Tuesdays are hell....**

Posted: 7/22/12 at 8:25pmI'm probably in the minority here, but I don't really think Jordan's vocal technique is all that solid. It's not bad, but I heard a great deal of straining at both Newsies and Bonnie & Clyde that made me think that he might be vocally fatigued later in the run.

Posted: 7/22/12 at 8:35pmBeltingBaritone no ones denying his technique is bad, but doen't help he went from doing a thick a**ed NewYork accent, which if you know any older Brooklynites, their accent has killed their voice, I saw it happen with my grandmother from Canarcy, its just too theoaty. The he jumped into doing Wildhorn power ballads, and back to the throaty New York accent. Add to the fact hes screaming half his lines in the accent, and his poor technique has only speed up the inevitable...his voice giving out.

I think Jeremy Jordan is a talented, wonderful performer, and perhaps this strenuous leading role deserves an alternate. But I don't get the whole "Well, if he had won the Tony, he would have DEFINITELY gotten one" deal. What does winning a Tony have to do with getting matinees off?

Posted: 7/22/12 at 9:06pmAlso realise he may of elected to have an alternate instead of a pay raise i he won. Second he'd only been playing thw role for 6 weeks by time nominations came out, so by the time anyone realised the role might be too demanding to do 8x it was too late and it was Tony time, and comps were already sent out and he didn't want any bad press, so he stuck it out through award season. Third is Audra got an alternate after she won the Tony....

Posted: 7/22/12 at 9:08pmYes, Audra did, which I think is despicable. Bess is a taxing role, and normally played by opera singers, who don't do 8 shows a week. Audra is not Superwoman. She should have had one from the start and not cost her production a great deal of money from exchanges due to her absences and then requested an alternate.

I agree, Jeremy does seem to be more worn out than from the beginning of the run. Saw the show last week, though, and he was fantastic and in great voice, just somewhat less energy than in promo vids, etc.
Since he's been the "face" of this show (besides Kyle Coffman in the logo), I wish there was a way to hear Brendon Stimson's version of the show when he went on.

Posted: 8/2/12 at 8:04pmWhen is Jeremy Jordan's vacation? It's September, right? I'm wondering if Newsies might possibly pop up on TKTS during that time. Any opinions?

Posted: 8/2/12 at 8:32pmTo be fair, here folks, the whole performing a role 8 times a week (Newsies' abundance of two show days makes it a particularly challenging 8 performances) is a relatively new phenomenon in terms of vocal performances. Operas were never performed this way and seldom are now. The only reason Broadway was any different was because producers wouldn't put up the money to pay for alternates or severely reduced performance schedules, plain and simple. If actors can handle 8 performances a week healthily (as many do), then that's wonderful and definitely to be respected. However, as audience expectation drives composers to write vocal parts ever higher, I don't really think it should be seen as shameful for a performer to need an alternate in a role. Certainly nobody wants to hear a tired or subpar performance, right?

Posted: 8/2/12 at 8:51pmAn earlier comment said Jeremy Jordan's vacation is Sept. 6-16.... He's missed a couple more shows (Mike Faist and Brendon Stimson performed the role of Jack Kelly), and a standby has been hired (Corey Cott). I think some fans may return to the show just to see the new Jack Kelly. Also, Disney has been really good about pushing advance sales with discount codes, so I don't foresee too much of a change in ticket sales.

Posted: 8/4/12 at 1:37amChances are Disney won't put out a discount for it because it is selling so well already and technically Jeremy Jordan isn't billed above the marquee like example EVITA Starring Ricky Martin and Elena Roger and Michael Cervais. Newsies doesn't have NEWSIES starring Jeremy Jordan. It just has Newsies.

Posted: 8/4/12 at 10:51am... Jeremy's face isn't in the logo?
#43Jeremy Jordan in Newises
Posted: 8/4/12 at 11:04am^ No, Kyle Coffman's photo was used for the logo.
#44Jeremy Jordan in Newises
Posted: 8/4/12 at 11:21amNo Jermey is not in the logo and there is some controvery about that...they think its either Kyle Coffman or Garett Hawe with their faces streched out and thicker eyebrows to give them an appeare similar to Jeremy. You can tell its not Jeremy by the super vainy arms which Jordan clearly doesn't have. Him as well as his agents were very po'd at Disney for this.

It is for sure Kyle Coffman, and the "conspiracy" comment Jeremy made about stretching Kyle's face seemed to be made in jest... [skip to the 4:03 mark in the video]. I don't really think there is a controversy.

Posted: 8/6/12 at 10:34pm^ I didn't see him, but I admit that I listened to a couple of songs performed by Mike Faist after coming across them on tumblr... and he sounded really good!

Looks like Corey Cott has started as the Jack Kelly stand-by.
