"He is also "belting"/screaming the entire score which can't help either."
Good lord. Men DO NOT belt. Women belt. Let's just nip that in the bud PLEASE. Although, I do agree that his technique doesn't sound the healthiest.

That is why the word is in quotes, he is in his falsetto at top volume, an...which is just as draining, and is also sometimes refered to as the male belt, despite it being the exact opposite place in ones voice and cords....

wicked1492: As a male musical theatre actor training to be able to withstand the rigors and demands on the voice in contemporary musical theatre, men do in fact belt, much in the same vein and technique as a female voice.
For example, take the final note of the 'Santa Fe' reprise in "Newsies", where Jordan ends the song on an 'A' just below middle 'C'. That very open, full sound is most definitely an example of a male belt.

As a fellow "male musical theatre actor training to be able to withstand the rigors and demands on the voice in contemporary musical theatre," I have been consistently taught by numerous vocal teachers with Doctorates in Music that referring to a man "belting" is incorrect anatomically and technically. Just tryin' to share what I was taught, but to each his own.
I, personally, do not refer to men as "belters" or say that a man "belts" because it is more commonly associated with a woman's technique.
An "A below middle C" is well within most pop/rock/musical-theatre tenor's ranges and the placement of that note in "Santa Fe" is very open and full, but well within his full-voice range.
Call it a belt if you will, I guess, but it's just such a feminine term and *I* certainly wouldn't want someone referring to my singing, as a man, as "belting."

BOYS DON'T BELT, is the title of my new FACEBOOK mini series, Men just sing loud, women use a whole different set of pipes, And with todays's mics and sound systems the board does that.
If JJ starts a reduced schedule, he will def get the boot from Harvey's attendance Wall. Though SMASH is not on ABC, it will help NEWSIES to have a TV person in the show. I do wonder what kind of character they have in mind, a James dean type without the homo overtones? Is he shorter than McPhee?
I'm more interested in the new "gay" character, how about Kazoo?
