The problem is that they can't come up with a satisfactory Mame.
Catherine Zeta-Jones?

"It's because she has to do everything. She has to, first of all, be a LADY and then she has to be a comedienne, then she has to sing her ass of, then she has to dance her ass off. She also has to be a beautiful, sensitive actress. Now where do you find all that in one person if it's not Angela Lansbury? It's very tough."
Catherine Zeta Jones or Megana Mullally. Not really that hard Jer.

I don't see Catherine as Mame, I think she's more a Vera.
I vote for Donna Murphy.

Why isn't he speaking to Bernadette?
Donna Murphy would be an incredible Mame.

That's fantastic news! It would be great if Jerry Herman wrote a brand new show!
What about Beth Leavel as Vera Charles?

No idea. He hinted at it in an interview he did about a possible Dolly revival a few years ago.

He did? I do remember him saying he didn't think she'd be right for it. He also commented a bunch of other possible Mames and Dollys. At that time, Queen Latifah was mentioned or rumoured for Mame.
Donny Murphy doesn't have the marquee value for it. That show is big. The Kennedy Center production starring Christine Baranksi couldn't move because it would have cost close to $10 or something like that. A major box-office (read: movie star) would be needed.
Meryl Streep? A little too old, but so was Patti for GYPSY...

I would love it if Jerry did write another show.
And, Dollypop, I am intrigued by your suggestion of 'Arsenic & Old Lace' with Channing & Lansbury - inspired indeed! :)

Posted: 5/24/10 at 3:03pmLet's just get rid of stage actors and only have movie stars on Broadway. That'll make everyone happy.

But some roles/shows are star vehicles and simply need a star to be a success on Broadway.
Mame is a star vehicle. If someone wants to see the musical without a star, then catch a regional or community theater production of the show.
You don't have to like her, but CZJ has proven she has the talent to be on the stage. She is not just a movie star.

Posted: 5/24/10 at 3:09pmWhen I saw Marin Mazzie in the Encores! KISMET a few years ago, I realized that she looked stunning in her costumes and delivered her lines with the brittle edge that Mame might use. She, too, would be perfect as Mame. In fact, I sent her an e-mail telling her that.

I think Marin Mazzie would also be a fantastic Mame.

She was good. She's not terrible and she's not the second coming. If she wasn't ~Catherine Zeta-Jones~, no one would be jizzing their pants over her performance like they are now. The amount of star ****ing that's been going on because she's on Broadway is embarrassing.
