Jerry Herman is thinking about writing another show!

Elaine Stritch for Vera
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

"Donna Murphy is too man-ish for Mame. She made a good Ruth Sherwood, but Mame, not so much." - Gothampc

She is no more mannish than Rosalind Russell who originated and still owns the role of Ruth Sherwood...

..and let me *think*.... oh yeah.. the same dame originated and still owns the role of Auntie Mame!

Granted the Mame of AUNTIE MAME and the Mame of MAME are somewhat different... but if Murphy can exude some warmth and a bit of star quality.. she can pull it off.

The problem with casting Vanessa Williams is that the Upsons and Babcock are presumably racist.

Or are they just anti-semites?

MAME .. unlike ... say.. HELLO, DOLLY isn't color-blind casting friendly.

Wasn't Herman thinking about TOPPER once?

That seems right up his alley.

All of you are overlooking the most obvious choice....Lucie Arnaz.

As far as I know, she didn't make a Liza-esque promise not to perform Mama's material.

Is Bebe Neuwirth as Vera too obvious of a choice?

Sometimes, obvious is best.

I also feel like if you get a star in one slot, you could put a theater name in another.

Elaine Paige as Mame, Jane Lynch as Vera.

What about Julia Louise Dreyfuss? I know she was in that TV movie musical Gepetto, but haven't heard anything from it. If she has a strong enough voice, I think she could be pretty great.

Or even Toni Collette. I know she said she wouldn't come back to Broadway, but many people make promises they don't keep. With the right director in charge and an enticing enough offer, she could do it.

Jane Lynch as Vera is probably the prime example of PERFECT CASTING. Dollypop, tell Jerry to make it happen!

Listen guys - some of these suggestions are ridiculous if you actually read the script. Mame is a WASP. Its imperative to the script, her relationship with the racist intolerant Upson family etc. Unless there is some major rewrites it just really puts a dent in people like Bette Midler or Vanessa Williams playing the role. Midler of course realized this very quickly after doing a table read for a proposed television remake and pulled out immediately.

Mame is a late thirties - early 40s year old Park Avenue lady and though I am all for non-traditional casting - she (again as originally written) is definitely a gentile white lady...

MB, is Zeta-Jones possibly too ethnic looking? I know she can get away with Hispanic/Italian roles. Would she have the WASP factor?
