SCB:

I withdrew my thoughts that JLY misses from his lack of concern for the public. He is obviously a warm and wonderful performer. Every time I have heard him, he sounds great. He misses shows only when he can not play the show-I'll even agree that he truly wants to perform eight shows a week. I have moved on to this new thread:

He may not be able to perform eight shows per week. Can anyone play eight shows a week of Franki Valli for long periods of time? Should a rotating cast be selected to protect the performers and the audience? Is this too much to ask? What happens next if JLY can not play eight shows per week?

I was chastised for calling this a "major concern." It could be major to the performer if the role is career threatening. It is of a major concern for people paying and wanting to see JLY.

What are the major flaws of these lingering questions?

Chanti--Would you be still bashing the guy's brains out if he didn't win the Tony? If you win a Tony, does that make you superhuman??

JLY's attendance record is no where near 50/50.

What is your agenda? And for someone who thinks we are all immature on here, you seem to did a pretty good job at being a baby in your last post.

In the last month, there has not been a fifty-fifty chance of seeing JLY or LaChanze.

LaChanze was on vacation. JLY was sick. He clearly states that he only has to do 7 performances a week. He even says when he is likely to take that one day off. He doesn't always do it. He would love to do the 8 shows.

The ticket buying public has a right to see a show. They see a show. End of story.

If your new series of questions are sincere, I can only ask - then what difference does it matter whether it's John, Michael, or anyone else.

I'm having trouble following your argument/position because I, and so many others believe your issue is JLY and that the producers should be making it news that he doesn't perform a set schedule. That it's misleading to have it otherwise.

Yet... now you are raising other issues regarding a rotating cast. I don't think any advertising is touting the show as a vehicle of John's. So there's no deceptive advertising going on.

What IS your issue? That he's missed performances? that the producers aren't advertising missed performances or whatever, that the show is too vocally demanding?

You keep changing the discussion LOL

Don't forget Drew Sarich going on as Lestat (at intermission) two days before closing when Hugh Panaro was too sick to go on. Sean MacLauglin took over for Sarich as Armand. I would of loved to have seen it, having an actor play one major role in the first act then switching during the second act.

The issues are, and always have been:

A realistic opportunity for audience members to see listed performers in the show.

A realistic opportunity for audience members to see the Tony-Award winners in a show.

The honesty of the producers in listing a cast for their shows.

The vocal demands of the role of Franki Valli. Producers having the guts and knowledge to know that eight shows per week in this role is too many.

Others have raised intricate vocal health issues such as the cause of "infections" and so on. Fatigue is a factor in the role of Franki Valli.

Considering the use of announced rotating casting choices so that those who buy tickets know. Only greedy producers could possibly object to this one.

The integrity and fortitude of individual performers to play the shows for which they are announced.

The list of questiong is not new, it IS sincere, and it doesn't matter whether it is John, Michael, Harvey, Christine, or Ethel! Show up for work, or make new ANNOUNCED arrangements.

Craig you do an excellent job, and BWW is wonderful. You quoted my number of posts accurately, but you obviously have not read many of them. I have been saying these things for two weeks. I have not raised one new fundamental point today. In fact, I have conceded on those points which are NOT central to the questions at hand.

I can't or rather won't comment anymore after this. It's futile.

You talking in circles - and I know you don't think you are - but you just admitted you haven't raised one new issue in the past 2 weeks.

The show isn't selling John as the lead nor is it selling out because of any one performer. It's not a question of producers being greedy or not. The cast that performs is the one listed in the program. You'll see statements about when and how understudies and standbys are used along with their names in the program. There's nothing covert going on. There is also a board as you walk in with any substitutions.

Again - there's no dishonesty going on.

And that is "REAL". Everything else is conjecture.

John was on vacation as well after the tonys and he was out this last week because he was sick.

For those of you that think he is lying, does he need to come on here or come up to and tell you that he is sick for you to beilive him? Actors dont just leave in the middle of the show because they want to, there is almost always a reason.

This show is not about John, it is about the four seasons, it is not going to kill anyone if John misses, lets give the guy a break ok? he is human like the rest of us

I wrote exactly: "I haven't raised one new point TODAY." I thought before I wrote those specific words because I know that everyone wants to argue about the words and what they are "hearing" not about the ideas and sentiments expressed.

Being accused of being inarticulate, employing name calling to avoid sincere debates, implying extremism about your opponent-these are all tried and true techniques of propaganda artists.

Elitism isn't about geography, or one's current location. Elitism can be found anywhere, but it is profoundly acute in the inner sanctum of Manhattan. Probably many of the posters on this board have never had anyone challenge the credibility of an "Tony Award Winning Performer." Probably no one ever questioned why anyone who is a star is not in a show. It is likely that only someone who has played a show in a Broadway Theater, or personally knows the star, knows anything about vocal health.

It's a wonder we can live out here in the hinter lands of the rest of this country. Gosh, golly gee, we rely on Manhattanites to help us define major issues, tell us how to vote, and even when to offer a concern or suggestion about some ridiculous code of behavior at a Broadway House. We even depend upon them to remind us when we are talking about live theater-without these demigods from Manhattan, we wouldn't know the difference.

Now you are accusing us of being snobs because we live in Manhattan? I am in Jersey. Your point is ludicrous. I don't care if you are from Beverly Hills. Don't make it a culture issue.

Well, anyone could chose to answer the issues directly, and one-by-one, but that's too much work. All the answers are simply understood in the elite northeast.......

JerseyBoy--
We know the real story so it doesn't matter. I don't usually defend someone like this, but JLY deserves it. He is a major talent who deserves the respect and admiration he gets from the fans.

Yep, and it's good to know that there are some ture fans out there, not just ones who say they support him and then turn around a say bad things about him.

In THE GOODBYE GIRL, Bernadette was out with a serious illness. Her u/s, Betsy Joslyn replaced her but I could tell that she was also having trouble and was missing notes left and right. During intermission an announcement was made that Joslyn had also taken ill and the "Swing" (I think her name was Karen Hess) went on for the second act--and was brilliant.

How's Dominic in the role?

I saw Jersey Boys for the first time Fridya night and he was in.. I thought he was great.. His voice did seem a little tired but he never cracked and he had so much energy. My sister thought he was having trouble with some high notes, but I was pretty impressed. However, I really DO NOT understand how this show won the Tony...
Saw Drowsy last night and it was amazing, the audience ate it up and laughed their butts off. So clever and what a cast.
