Chanticleer, this has only been recent - JLY has been able to play all eight performances for a while now (since the show opened), has had a few sicknesses here or there...only now is he taking off so many performances. The summer may be harsher on his voice - who knows?
If you think there should be an alternate so much, then you write to the producers, and stop voicing about it on the board. You're just stirring up trouble.
I'll be honest- I followed this thread for the first two pages before it became clear that the same "points" were being slam, bang, jammed to death. Craig, bless you for sticking to the FACTS. Candida is what amounts to a yeast infection and the build-up is killer. When one is on powerful antibiotics like John was for his infection, everything gets wiped out- even the good, normal bacteria. In this kind of environment, candida thrives and it sounds like John wound up with a whopping case. He'll be fine and back to his normal performance schedule very soon, I'm sure.
In the meantime, what a rush for Longoria, eh? He can now say that he's played both Pesci and Valli... in the SAME PERFORMANCE!

Ppl in the audience knew early on that JLY's voice wasn't up to par--at one point he dropped the falsetto completely and sang in different octave. My friend and I sort of did that "turn and stare" at each other that said "uh--oh!". And then during the "Bowling alley scene", where the guys are standing in front of the "_our __ons" sign...there was no sign. But the guys started improvising the dialogue to come up with a new name for the group. Soon after revealing their "Four Seasons" name, Daniel stepped up and told crowd how they were going to take a 5 minute break.
The transition went smoothly. The sign "magically reappeared" and Michael did a superb job. I'm hoping JLY gets better soon. He's fantastic.

The sign didn't come on? Dear lord, THAT had to be some interesting improv right there. Yikes. "Sooo... we, uhm... need a name... on the way out of the alley I saw this... pamphlet with the name of the joint. The Four Seasons..."
And wow, that had to be downright scary for JLY. Nice when you open your mouth to sing and nothing comes out- betcha he moved it down the octave to see if he had ANY notes at all. *big eyes*

It's not that the sign didn't come "on", they didn't even lower it. I thought it was a stage malfunction at first. Didn't even suspect that it might prompt a break.

I was lucky enough to see Jersey Boys in April and was blown away by all the performances. All actors/actresses were in fine voice and the energy was through the roof. The audience was eating it up and a good time was had by all.
I was also there this past Saturday afternoon and about 10 minutes into the show, I felt like something was wrong. The energy just wasn't there. John, though looking fine and acting beautifully just wasn't hitting his notes. You would have never known by looking at his face, but having seen the show previously, it was obvious that something was up.
When they finally made the announcement that Michael Longoria was going to be finishing the show, I actually felt a bit of relief wash over me. I had paid $111.25 and stood in the cancellation line for 3 hours, and I wanted to see the show I had seen in April, and up until now I wasn't seeing that show. I give JLY a lot of credit for attempting to do the show and I give him even more credit for knowing when it was time to bow out. He also knew that the audience wasn't getting the best Frankie Valli that afternoon.
The audience didn't seem happy, but they didn't know that they were in great hands. Within 5 minutes of restarting, the Jersey Boys launched into "Sherry," and when Michael opened his mouth and a crystal clear, loud falsetto rang over the system, the audience burst into applause. It was the first time that afternoon, we had really heard the sound that we were waiting for. "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man" came immediately after and by then, Michael had the audience in the palm of his hand, as evidenced by the huge standing ovation he would get after "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."
I had to rush after the matinee but made a point to come back after the evening performance and congratulate Michael on a job well done. This kid is a star.

The audience showed tremendous support for ML during the show-e.g. the applause after Sherry disrupted the pace of the show; longest ever during this interval (at least as far as I've seen). I think it surprised Michael.
Well, I think that the rest of the cast was probably on edge knowing that JLY wasn't feeling well, but once Michael stepped in, they were able to give 110%. Anyone in the audience could tell that the whole tone/mood of the show changed during "Sherry."
I am glad to hear that Michael is doing so well in the show. When I saw him, he was wonderful.

Does anyone think ML will take over for JLY whenever he leaves the show for good?

Do you by any chance remember any of what that improvised, or generally how they got to the name?
DRSisLove, I think that I heard somewhere that Michael can't do the role more than four times without getting raspy and ruining his voice.
