I think this may have happened over the weekend. I'm scared to see who will follow suit to bump up 10 more bucks, although I don't any will...no one has the momentum Jersey Boys does...

They are killing the goose that lays the golden egg
Thank God for TDF & Broadway Box. They are out of their minds. I do not care about momentum. With few exceptions, they are pricing themselves out of many people budgets
Just think, people will be paying more to eventually see a replacement cast. The inmates are indeed running the asylum

luckily we got our tickets while they were still $111
wow, is that the highest ticket price (besides premium) on Broadway right now?

Maybe when people go to the box office & see these prices, they will walk away. This is the only way they will get the message.
This sends a great message to tourists. Word gets around & people will start staying away

Posted: 12/27/06 at 9:17pmMy humble prediction: I think there will always be enough people willing to pay any price to fill every seat at the really hot shows, like "Jersey Boys". Those will keep going strong no matter how high prices rise. It's the shows that have even just a little less momentum (think "Drowsy") that will suffer, to say nothing of the "Spring Awakenings" and "Grey Gardens" of the world. Those will see shorter and shorter runs. But as long as the "Jersey Boys" and "Wickeds" can stay running at prices like $120+, I fear producers may not get the message...

Posted: 12/27/06 at 9:28pmI am not trying to side with the producers or anything here(because I for one, am a very broke single mother/college student and I have spent many hours in line to get 25 dollar Jersey Boys tickets) BUT...isn't it their goal to make money? So if there is a demand for tickets and they sell out even at those prices, it makes sense for them to sell them at those prices.

Posted: 12/27/06 at 9:32pmTRULY RIDICULOUS! It's an outrage that they have the nerve to charge $131.25 for PARTIAL VIEW seats no less. Pure greed!

More shows will lose money as people only see the megahits & everything else goes by the boards
Looks like without discounts, our theatergoing will be greatly reduced. We will have to enjoy the city, walking around, more movies & dining out. A shame but it looks like another entertainment venue is being squeezed out by greed. In the past, the price increases were 4/5 years between. Now it looks like they will be yearly
Hey why not $ 100 for standing room while they are at it? Concessions inside the theater will also suffer
Re the poster who said about shows selling out, the fact that Broadway Box, TKTS & TDF exist shows there is a resistance to paying exhorbitant prices.

Posted: 12/27/06 at 11:07pmI would have to think that once this show starts to dye down that they'll bring their prices down to the normal $110. It's a shame they're charging almost $100 for partial view & rear mezz. They'll get away with it for a while.

Posted: 12/27/06 at 11:14pmIts amazing the difference it costs in New York, compared to St. Louis. I think its fascinating that Orchestra tickets go for 130 dollars there, where as here, they only go for about 80 dollars. Although, in order to get to STL I have to drive 2 hours south. lol... Its funny how much geography controls price... Location, Location, Location...

I had friends who came to NYC this week - average family from the burbs - who were delighted that they only had to pay $150 a seat for Jersey Boys. Most theatregoers are tourists. Most tourists save for their trips to NYC and can afford paying top dollar when they only see one or two shows.
Theatre is a business. They aren't trying to please us poor fans of the genre. As for the locals - It's too bad that it has become so expensive, but I'm also really sad that apartments in Manhattan are so outrageous and that the price of pretzels in Central Park is out of control. Hey - that's life in the city.
Maybe growing Broadway prices will help revive Off Broadway.

I would like to believe that if prices go too high eventually supply and demand would cause them to fall, but think about this -- in the last 100 years or so, tickets have gone from a few dollars to over $100. Have prices EVER gone down? I should think not (perhaps during the depression?). Certainly not in my lifetime, when they were less than half what they are now.
I hate that I work in the theatre, sometimes on Broadway, and can afford to see just a small portion of the shows that open each year. But to say that prices will go down or stabilize overlooks all the evidence in the entire history of Broadway.

Once they get $120 or $130 for a ticket it will not come back down. No matter how long Jersey Boys is a hit.

And when people finally realize that JB's is BEATLEMANIA with a slight book and people singing offstage for the lead they can still get $60 at the TKTS booth.
Sorry I just didn't get this show.
What show will do this next?
WICKED?
or MARY POPPINS?

I loved every single minute of the show. I just wish they did not raise the prices. I want to see it a third time and I can't afford it. Do they still have standing room at all?
It is just pure entertainment and I love all of the JB. Robert, Chris, Daniel and JLY. I miss hearing them sing.
My ears adore them.

Michael Bennett said that this might help revive Off-Broadway. The sad thing about that is that Off-Broadway prices are now climbing up to $100, also. Wasn't it GREY GARDENS that was $85??

Margo Channing says Off Broadway is dead, and she should know.
And Corrine yer precious original J boys (so talented) will not see a bit of this price raise and their contracts will go up in smoke when they want a piece of this pie.

Posted: 12/28/06 at 7:52amAlmost one year ago, I stood in the rush line at Jersey Boys and saw person after person walk through the door and be beyond delighted to drop $111 a ticket for any seats that were left over. The sad fact is, that there are people out there who either live in NY and have the money, or are visiting NY and have saved their money. Shows like Company or Rent probably can't do this, but Jersey Boys, Wicked, Mamma Mia and Poppins can do it, and the people will fill the seats.

Interesting article about the great tourist year it was in the city this year.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TRAVEL/12/27/new.york.tourists.reut/index.html
That, combined with the fantastic year it was in the financial industry with record bonuses, and there will be no shortage of people who can afford and are willing to pay these new prices.

I didn't say it was going to make Off Broadway more affordable, But if Off Broadway tickets stay at 85 dollars and Broadway tickets soar to $150 - Off Broadway will suddenly seem a lot more "affordable" by comparison.
One of the stigmas that helped "kill" Off Broadway was that rising production costs largely forced Off Broadway ticket prices to match those on Broadway. Theatregoers, especially tourists, won't pay Broadway prices for Off Broadway theatre, regardless of quality.
But the sudden surge of Broadway prices has more to do with supply and demand, than rising production costs - and if the trend continues - I think there is a definite opportunity for Off Broadway to recapture some of its audience.
