I'm watching this on HBO tonight after having not seen its since it's theater release a long while ago. I remember being disappointed when I first saw it. The characters breaking the fourth wall just ruined the story for me. I know the musical has the character of Tommy speaking to the audience throughout, but why would they feel it necessary to keep this in the movie? In a movie, the story tells itself. It was actually kind of creepy to see these characters and their very bad makeup similar to Beyond the Sea with Kevin Spacey. I know many musicals don't translate well to screen but this one just seems like it should have been so much better.

Bored me to death.
I wonder why the hell did they get Clint Eastwood of all people to direct this
I think the narration could've worked, and it worked best with Bob Gaudio's stuff, for some reason. I don't know why they abandoned that when it came to the equivalent of "Winter" in the show. (Frankie's narration.)
The makeup at the end was HILARIOUS. I forget who said it (I don't even remember if it was this board), but someone said that JLY as Frankie at the end looked older than Frankie does now.

Producer Graham King sent it to him out of curiosity as he was aware that Clint is a musician himself (even being a big jazz fan).
And for the record, I liked the Jersey Boys movie, sue me.

Yes, agreed that the end scenes were hilarious and also painful to watch. JLY was so good in the OBC but in the movie he sounded nothing like FV. Maybe too many years had passed since he first played the role? Or maybe there was too much movie acting called for and he wasn't a movie actor? Just really disappointing to see a good show portrayed so poorly.

I remember hearing a radio interview with the real Frankie Valli last year. He hadn't seen the film yet (I don't know if he still has), but when the interviewer describe the makeup, Valli responded 'I wasn't that old'.

This was filming around the same time he came back to the show in 2013. He sounded good live. I liked the movie but it was too dark compared to the show, all the joy was excised.

I saw him in the OBC and when he came back (twice). I just don't think he's that great a film actor -- the last two times I saw him, he was amazing.
"Sue me."
Will do. What's your address??? That film was a disgrace. Revolting.
I absolutely hated the film. It was an absolute bore.
I rented the film and couldn't even make through the first twenty minutes, and I tried to watch it twice. Just an absolute snooze fest.

That's Hollywood speak for it sucked. By saying I haven't seen it, you're never going to get him to admit it, especially as he gets Executive Producer credit (and paycheck).

I liked the movie too, Jeffrey, but as its own entity and not necessarily as an adaptation of the musical.
That was how I felt the first time I saw it -- like a Four Seasons biopic in a world where a story about the Four Seasons never happened on stage -- but the more times I saw it, the less I could forgive. But it's fun for a laugh.

I wonder if anyone ever considered casting Christian Hoff as Tommy DeVito in the movie version, considering he won added acclaim by picking up a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway version.
^By now, Hoff is just too old to be playing the role onscreen.
The lawsuit didn't help, either.
