I have a feeling that some of you have your fangs bared waiting to attack Jessica Biel no matter how well she performed. She could have opened her mouth and channeled Barbara Cook and you'd be muttering "awwww, she sounded too polished." I have to say I was both impressed and pleased that she took on a difficult assignment that could have blown up big time in her face and pulled it off. That puts her miles , maybe light years ahead of the twinkies in the film business.
That said, a more comfortably-keyed role for her could make her a formidable presence on Broadway.

Right, or even this role in the original keys!

It has nothing to do with her being Jessica Biel, I'm just incredibly picky when it comes to sopranos. I've said similar things about Broadway sopranos who are not celebrities.
People on here are far to judemental
She did a great job on them, this girl always suprises me
Was I the only one...actually, come to think of it, I probably was the only one, who caught the Stephan Elliott film "Easy Virtue"? She sang "Mad about the Boy" for the opening credits...
Mad About The Boy
Her singing in that film was posted when her casting was announced. That clip shows that she can sing, but not necessarily that she could sing the part of Sara. I, for one, am very impressed.

I think it is quite unfair to judge one way or the other based on the quality of sound in this recording. But it's important to state an opinion.
The problem is the opinions stated here can be so caustic, catty and sadly regressive. If Jessica Biel decides to try out for a lead role (and she did have to audition) and wins the part based on her talent, that is an accomplishment that should be championed. I don't see any of the "pop princesses" daring to do this. Some of them even have childhood experience in musicals, but now that they are "stars" they have no desire to put it on the line the way Biel did. Cut her a break, kids. Far FAR worse performers have had careers on Broadway. I for one, would gladly shell out 100 to see her in a show and I'll bet I'm not alone in that.
I for one have re-played her "If I were a Bell" over and over. I am extremely impressed. Wish I could have seen it.
Obviously some of those notes were really high for her... but I think she has such a beautiful, natural voice, and I really loved listening to it. BSM was a fabulous Sky, too, and I don't necessarily love him in everything he does.
A couple of years ago, if someone had said "And Jessica Biel is starring in a production of GUYS AND DOLLS" I probably would have been shocked,. But after her turn in Easy Virtue, I am coming to see her in a different light.
Good on you, Jessica.
