I think all of the late-night hosts do a decent job with getting eyes on Broadway, though Colbert does this a bit more than the others.
Plus, usually the theatre performers who live in New York City tend to be good, reliable guests to fill in gaps where need be.
- Nathan Lane has been on all of the shows multiple times, especially Colbert and Seth Meyers
- Audra McDonald had a recurring segment singing Yahoo! Answers on Jimmy Fallon
- Laura Benanti has a recurring segment as Melania Trump on Colbert.
A popular story from back in the day was that Charles Nelson Reilly (from Match Game, but started on Broadway in HOW TO SUCCEED and BYE BYE BIRDIE) was an overwhelmingly frequent guest on Johnny Carson because he lived three blocks from his Burbank studio.

I think that is the case whenever an SNL cast member shows up now.

The "reliable filler guest" has been a fixture of talkshows as long as they've existed: fun and engaging guests who can usually accommodate a last-minute invite (or could be bumped if someone like Barack Obama books at the last minute). Theatre vets like Robin Williams, Martin Short, Nathan Lane, Andrew Rannells, Mulaney & Kroll, Amy Sedaris, and some SNL vets come to mind. Heck, back in the day Trump was one of them for shows like Howard Stern.
