So wonderful!
I love this! Although, I feel like there should be a posthumous for Fred Ebb.
I would definitely put John Kander in a "I'm surprised he doesn't already have one" bucket. Maybe I don't really understand how it works but it feels a bit silly of them to wait this long in case his health declined before he ever received it. The man is now closer to 100 than 90! In fact, didn't this just happen with Lansbury? If whoever makes these decisions doesn't think about dishing them out to the person when they are healthy enough to accept it who is this for? Them or the audience/Tony awards to feel better about themselves? These people deserve to actually experience the recognition!
With Lansbury and Terrence McNally, my understanding is it was "tipped" to the Tony admin committee that neither was in particularly great health and this was the moment to do it.
With Kander and Grey, it's just a great excuse to honor two active individuals who were crucial to each other's careers. Kander also has a show this season, similar to Sheldon Harnick in 2016, Albee in 2005, and Sondheim in 2008.
I'll continue beating the drum for Jonathan Tunick in future years, but of course I can't be anything but thrilled for these two gents being honored.
There are several I've thought of for who should present each of them their awards at the Tonys, but my first choices are...
John Kander - Chita Rivera
Joel Grey - Jennifer Grey
