"I'm getting whiplash from this premature, we-don't-have-the-facts news.
He's playing the Baker, he's playing the Wolf, no, the Baker ...
All have links to articles. All articles, therefore, are full of crap."
That is what has been happening. Both Broadway World and Playbill have changed their sources.
"Variety reports that Depp will portray the Baker, while the Hollywood Reporter states that he is in talks to portray the Wolf."

"Variety now reports that Depp is in talks to play 'The Baker,' while The Hollywood Reporter claims that he will play "a hungry and sexy variation of the fairy tale wolf character." At the very least, Depp is all but confirmed for the film. Deadline announced that sources revealed Depp's deal is "almost" done.
BroadwayWorld will keep you updated as Depp wraps up negotiations and the official word on which role he'll take on comes in!"

This possible casting gives me hope that Kate Winslet will be cast as the Baker's Wife. That would be PERFECT. :)
At least Winslet and Depp have chemistry together (as they did in Finding Neverland).
That might work ... and I would much prefer Winslet as the Baker's Wife to Witherspoon.
Look at these two!
If they have Johnny, her name has to have been brought up. How could it not? It just seems natural.
A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd already prove you don't need good singing to make a Sondheim movie musical, so they might as well get Pierce Brosnan involved.
I wish Sondheim gave a flying fvck about film adaptations of his work.
I don't get the impression that he is completely comfortable with the filmmaking process. He's not a book writer, so it's not like he'd be the best to adapted a show to the screen anyway.
But, I TOTALLY agree with you.
If they're thinking of female costars Johnny has had for a potential Baker's Wife, I shudder at the thought of them picking the most frequent as of late.
I love Depp and I love Finding Neverland. Even though he played it straight, Barrie was more of a child than an adult. Is the Baker the same? I think the Baker wants to be an adult but hasn't had to until he's forced. The Baker's Wife is more responsible, smarter, and does all the work.
I know I'm likely in the minority, but I am TOTALLY AGAINST Depp playing The Baker. When he played Sweeney, that was great. But that's because he was playing a character that he obviously felt comfortable with. Johnny's characters have always been eccentric, even J.M Barrie is a bit of an odd duck with his man-child persona. I think the role of The Baker would probably be pushing him way out of his comfort zone, because The Baker is not eccentric, zany, or manic. He's just a man who wants a child with his wife, and is willing to go to whatever ends to reach that goal. This aside, Depp is not vocally able to take on The Baker, and the last thing I want is to see the vocal range changed like they did for Sweeney.
Kerry Washington for the bakers wife
better than any white actress for the role
I hope you realize what a racist statement that is.

I'm just astounded that no one else has ever realized that the role of the Baker's Wife is exclusively suited to the singular talent that is Kerry Washington.
Now that they knocked him off on SMASH,
how 'bout Mientus as Jack?
Obviously Kerry Washington is the only person who could play Jack. She's better than any honkey cracker could ever be.

I would like to see an All Kerry Washington Into the Woods.
I wouldn't put it past this director.
"Mientus was knocked off Smash?" - says a person whose NBC affiliate pre-empted it so she hasn't seen it yet

except it's not possible to be racist to white people

Depp has the right range for the Baker. In fact, the part is probably a better fit for him (vocally) than Sweeney. IIRC, the only key they changed of his songs in Sweeney was Pretty Women, presumably to accomodate Alan Rickman.
