Yes, he thanks Sondheim.

If he thanked everyone but Sondheim, I would be insulted on his behalf. I really would.
The article links in the sidebar make me weep for the future of humanity.
I dont understand what's so humbling about winning an awards. Usually INFLATES my ego...
I always thought that once you've reach the kind of critical acclaim and general success it takes to even be nominated for an award like a Golden Globe, you're pretty happy just being part of that crowd.
well since when are the golden globes that huge a deal? Johnny Depp has been part of "that crowd" its just that he consistently plays the same or over rated characters... Sweeney was probably one of his best roles to date (and with the source material it was almost impossible to screw up)! I'm not, however, insulting Johnny, I thought he did a great job and took a real risk with this.
Anyway I'm happy him and Sweeney Won, but I really don't think he gave enough credit to Sondheim after all this material would never have existed without him...
"the mastermind Stephen Sondheim" isn't enough credit?
The Globes have always been a big deal. They are kind of a barometer for the Oscars.
And I agree, what more would one want him to say about Sondheim?. he was giving a thank you "statement". I think what he said was fine.
I've worked with him and found him to be a wonderfully kind and considerate person, a standout among the many performers I've met through my job. I have no doubt he felt genuinely humbled to receive this award, regardless of its status in some minds.
They are kind of a barometer for the Oscars.
I don't really think the Golden Globes can accurately predict what/who are going to win come Oscar time, but I do wish Depp/Sweeney all the luck in the world at the Oscars.
I don't want to dismiss the Golden Globe, I was just stating that they are not nearly as honored or esteemed as the Oscars are.
Well, that's true, but even though someone like Johnny Depp wouldn't need one to advance his career, it's a nice step up.
I agree. Jack Sparrow has made Depp an even bigger star and garnered him almost universal recognition... he's one of the biggest names in hollywood today! He could continue making movies like "Pirates" his whole life, never win any awards, and remain a huge star... it's good that he is doing edgier roles and winning himself more critical success (rather than just public)!

what are you talking about? Edgier roles not popular with the public is all Depp has ever done, and then his blockbuster trilogy came along. Now it is done, and I'm sure he will continue to roles worthy of critical acclaim that will remain edgy and interesting choices.
I mean- Cry-Baby, Edward Scissorhands, Gilbert Grape, Fear and Loathing: I could go on.
You left out "Chocolat"--- one of my personal faves !!!
Why wouldn't he have thanked Sondheim?
Johnny's got a lot of class, and I find that refreshing in an era of...
..."not class."
Yes pippin, you are right. I meant to say getting away from his commericial/blockbuster role(s) (Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka) and returning to those edgier type roles.
He only did the Pirate movies for his kids. He's not your typical Hollywood player; if anything he's anti-Hollywood. Hence his home in France...
I thought his "speech" was elegant, concise and well-balanced.
Kudos for him.
I agree with you, zoo. I am also glad that he doesn't seem to be taken in by the Hollywood machine with the pirates phenom.
Great speech! I'm so glad he released something. I'm really happy he won this award, as silly as it sounds. I often see so many wonderful perfomances of actors and actresses that never seemed to get recognized. So it's nice that someone who I was rooting for won an honor! I agree he really is a classy Hollywood star. I also love that he seems to have respect for the people he works with along with a deep love for his family. Go Johnny! I hope an Oscar nom is on the way- he deserves it - as does the movie.
As the speech might indicate, he actually has a very nice way with words. His introductions to the "Burton on Burton" books are fantastic and very witty.
His appearance on "Inside The Actor's Studio" was one of the best that I have seen.
("Simpsons" cast was the best !!)
I bet that, inside, Johnny was really glad he didn't have to get up and make a speech in front of everyone. He's always been shy about that sort of thing.
But yes, great speech, very concise.
He strikes me as one of the least pretentious actors. He's truly a gifted actor as well. I'd love to see him win the Oscar as I feel he deserves it. He took a huge risk doing a musical and came out triumphant. He was brilliant. I am listening to the soundtrack now and love it. I'll be going back to see the film yet again at some point very soon.
