If Johhny Depp can learn to sing the role of sweeney, then I would love to see him in the movie. He could act the heck out of the role.
I am a little worried about Tim Burton directing this. I hope he makes it very creepy and horror-movie style, not cartoony.

At one point, I believe Kevin Kline was cast as the Demon Barber when it was supposed to be made into a film prob. a decade ago. That would have been great although I am still looking forward to seeing this adaptation get translated to screen even with Depp.
this has me really nervous...I'm sorry I know I shouldn't judge b/c I haven't seen anything but seriously you cannot compare the singing in "walk the line" to f**king Sweeney Todd! It is worlds harder than Cash's music! I am sure that with a lot of work Johnny depp can sort of pull it off...but why not just leave this to other people or not a do a film of this at all? Doesn't Sondheim have to ok it? I just really don't want them to f**k this up. Hairspray...whatever. But Sweeney is Sweeney and you can't half ass this peice.
gustof- I actually don't think they have to get Sondheim's appproval.
oh s**t really?? why wouldn't they...that scares me even more. Hey w/e happened to Sam Mendes version? So many questions...

I don't know. I won't discount the idea so quickly. I love Johnny Depp and think this has the potential to be interesting.

I'd heavily prefer that they just do Chistopher Bonds's play, than Sondheim's musical.
Depp surely can act the hell out of Sweeney, that's not what I'm worried about, but getting an amateur to sing an heavily Operatic role like this is not my idea of a goodtime.
I'd always conceivably like to listen to the soundtrack, and I most definately wouldn't want to listen to Depp's untrained, raspy, thin voice sing Epiphany.
Just maybe he's got a booming, baritone, Brian Stokes Mitchell in him.
....Unlikely.
I like my Sweeneys big voiced and classically trained.
well, Idon't think he does. danny elfamn and the producers may let him approve the casting, but since he only the composer, i don't think he has any say. it sucks, but what are you gonna do?
"I'd heavily prefer that they just do Chistopher Bonds's play, than Sondheim's musical."
Slightly off-topic, but I've always wanted to read that, but I have had zero luck in finding a copy anywhere. Does anyone know where it's available, if it is?
it's not so much Johnny that I'm afraid of b/c he is a great actor and I am in awe of his abilities and I know he could act the HELL out of the role. It's more the singing elements of it and while i'm sure he will find an interesting way to work around it. It really is also Tim Burton and Danny Elfman's involvment. I'm afraid of it becoming that sort of comic dark that Nightmare before xmas or Edward Sciccorhands. I was really hoping to see Mendes take on the peice. Seeing as he's a theater guy that I think would stay more faithful to what Sondheim and Wheeler's vision was. But who knows? It might be brilliant...I hope it is. I'm just nervous lol. But on the bright side i'm always up for some Helena Bonham Carter
Heck,I'm still hoping that since he only said they've been "talking" about it, that it's not actually going to happen.
Me to BroadwayGirl107...me too
Sondheim loves the script and has signed the contracts for the movie and given his OK. He and Depp have met and got along great. The movie is being directed by Tim Burton, NOT Danny Elfman. The movie will not be a direct translation of the the show. It has been rewritten to work as a movie. I'm not sure what music will be cut, but I know there are some cuts. It will be dark and very scary. And I'm sure lots of fun too!
If it is dreck, why did you see it 3 times?
I saw it 3 times, because I saw the original, back when I used to see everything, and a very good friend of mine was in it. Then, I saw the tour with Angela Lansbury, because that same friend was playing Tobias; and, I saw the revival, because I really like Patti LuPone.
For a man of your age, you sound like a petty 5 year old.
You really know how to go out of your way to bash Sweeney or another Sondheim show. You're really pathetic.
I didn't go out of my way, in the slightest. And, some might argue that it's even more pathetic to feel compelled to respond to my posts.

I have a feeling that if Depp decides that he's not good enough for the singing aspect, then they will dubb him over. I doubt he would risk half assing his performance on screen if he's not completely happy with his voice. I trust he'll make the right decsion.
And they'd better get Meryl Streep as Lovett. Helena Carter can be the Beggar Woman if she must be in the film, but Streep for Lovett!
Are we to assume that Helena Bonham Carter will appear as Mrs. Lovett or the Beggar Woman or even Johanna?
I think it's a little impossible for someone to right for Lovett, Beggar Woman, AND Johanna. At one age.
um Helena Bonham Carter is amazing and could do all those parts and kick ass at all three...she rules. That being said she should be the Beggar Woman IMO and yes yes yes to Streep for Mrs. Lovett!
Okay, I'm sure she should go from Johanna's coloratura, to the belty mezzo/alto of Lovett and the Beggar Woman.
In your dreams. Johanna is a YOUNG teen. Lovett and the Beggar Woman are mature women. Get a grip. They need a young woman/girl for Johanna.
Clearly if there casting Depp and doing reworking of the peice...it's not going to be all about the singing! At least casting wise. With Tim Burtons crazy vision I could see him putting Carter in any of these roles. Have you seen Big Fish? Carter plays the old witch and the young wife...both brillaintly IMO. I'm not trying to argue w/you i'm just saying that in Burtons world she could potentially fit any of the three characters and have it work. I'm not saying she'd be the perfect johanna but maybe w/ dubbing she could definitley pull it off.
Well, ofcourse she should be played by someone younger, but that doesn't mean that she will.
I think the beggar woman would be ideal, since she'll probably get a part in the film.
So, just how idiotic is it to cast people who can't sing in what is, virtually, an opera? Anyone?
Well, do you know for sure that it is going to be a musical version? It wouldn't be too suprising if they just made it into a Depp/Burton/Elfman film and through Sondheim out all together.
I don't think we know anything about it. I'm just saying that to do the Sondheim version and cast a bunch of people who need to be dubbed, would be ludicrous. It would appeal to no one.
I can't make any judgements until I see some kind of preview for it. I love Johnny Depp as an actor but I am unsure about his singing abilities. Renee Zellweger shocked me in Chicago so I have faith they can get something out of him. However, I was less than thrilled with Madonna in Evita.
